i seriously seem to forget when i play a singles match to set with my right foot, and for some inane reason set with my left foot in a closed stance then proceed to be off balance and dump balls into the middle of the net. i do well in practice to put my weight on the right foot but in a match, suddenly im a wandering idiot on the deuce court side. i much prefer hitting the fh on the backhand side as i can easily set with both feet but on the deuce it feels unnatural to me to set with the right

Repetition is the key. Practice the footwork & setting the right foot without a ball. Put a ball hopper (or some other suitable target) in the middle of NML. Orient the hopper so that you can use one of the corners as your contact target. Start from various places behind & to the side of the hopper target. Adjust your footwork so that you end up setting your right foot at a suitable location to put you in an optimal position with respect to the hopper -- this can be done with either a neutral stance or a partially open stance.

Have a buddy hand-feed you some easy balls that require you to move & set the right foot. Repeat repeatedly and then repeat some more.
