Got an invite yesterday. Should be fun. One of my boyhood tennis idols vs. a current comic fave. Benefitting a good cause. And being catered by Baby Blues, my fave rib joint in L.A.!

Will Ferrell is a huge tennis nut isn't he?

He'll get dominated though.

No way - Ferrell is top 5 at best.

At least it's for charity, so Mats should ease up on Ferrell alittle. Unlike a few years ago---I saw Wilander play an exhibition against Luke Jensen here---he handled Jensen's big lefty and righty serves with ease. Pretty impressive, for an old-timer. Years ago, he inspired me to learn both a two and a one-handed backhand, the best of both worlds---topspin and slice, baby....

So, the late-1800s up until 1989 is one era? And Mats Wilander is the most talented player in that era?

Or are you including former versions of tennis played in the time of King Henry the VIII also? Because there were some quality players back then too, notably Sir Franklin The Swift.

He was over-rated. Never won a slam.

Pic 1: Ferrell hitting the court with jumbo stick in hand. He actually wielded it admirably for an extended rally. For match play, he went to the Prince EXO3 Red and was head-to-toe in sponsor K-Swiss' kit. Wilander swung a KBlade and sported cool Lacoste gear.

Pic 2: Will--in Swine-flu mask--making Mats hustle. Will's strength is a steady, deep forehand. I'd guess 3.0, for you NTRP-heads. Mats appears to be in great condition and did a fine job of keeping Will involved in points by feeding him manageable shots.

Pic 3: Trophy pose against a Swede, handicapped by being forced to play with a child in tow.

Pic 4: Gimelstob chucking his racquet after losing a point, as Rainn Wilson and his comic counterpart recline.

Thanks for your photos Roy. What did you think of the event overall?

Pic 4: Paintjob?

Pic 5: Rainn Wilson seemed at home on court. Modest, but consistent, spin serve and wristy, but respectable topspin forehand.

Pic 6: Chair ump Andy Richter at ease in L.A. and ready to reunite with Conan for their upcoming nightly gig.

Only a modest turnout, attendance-wise, but a fun afternoon overall. With post-match music by The Dan Band of OLD SCHOOL-fame.

Thanks for your photos Roy. What did you think of the event overall?

As the event was a fund-raiser close to the hearts of Mats and Viveca, Will's Swedish-born wife--The Swedish School of Los Angeles--I hoped the event would have been better attended. Seating in the small stadium were occupied at a mere fraction of full-capacity.

But all involved made the most of things. A very funny young Swedish comic pretending to be a son of Bjorn called "Lars Borg" kicked things off well. A Swedish hip hop act also injected some energy between singles and doubles competition. Many freebies were about and pre-auction items were offered.

During play, Will's hilarious commentary was non-stop via wireless mic. Great stuff. Didn't stick around for the evening events, but happy to have been there.
