View Full Version : Borg's wristbands?

borg's headband

Anyone know what brand Borg used for his blue/yellow-striped wristbands. They were not Fila like his headband, that's for sure. I've searched the internet for ages to find info on this matter, but to no luck. Hopefully someone here can help.

Of course, in the end I'd like to find one or two, but these seem so rare they never show up on **** or anything, unlike all the Fila stuff.

Cheers, Toby

Those are the colors of Sweden to my knowledge. They were probably something he found in that country. I doubt you'll find any.

And Brazil.. but since Borg was no Brazilian , yes thats right, he most likley picked them up there(=Sweden)

He was doing some ads for the local sports comic book and or magazine called 'Buster' and wore their headband early on in his career. . it is possible its the same story with these wristbands .

He endorsed Fila , thats also right but not worldwide. In Scandinavia he wore Jockey tennis wear . He played the Bancroft Borg Personal wood racket in the US and in Asia but in Europe swung Donnay bats.. First the Diamant version , then the Allwood and lastly the Borg Pro . which also later was used by a Borg clone from France , Thierry Tulasne ( now coaching various French players) and the original American big forehand basher from the Bolleteri Academy namely Jimmy Arias.

Yes I know those are the colors of Sweden, which doesn't necessarily make them Swedish. I found this picture http://www.80s-tennis.com/pages/borg-wristbands.html and there it says they were bought in Monte Carlo. Doesn't say anything about the brand though.

Another rare Borg collectible should be the headband he used in Sweden, where he was endorsing the local brand NEH. See this picture: http://blogadmin.cafe.se/files/6/6758/bjorn7.jpg I've never seen those on **** either.

believe it or not but i actually have that wristband in the second photo. They are adidas made specifically for him. The yellow on those wristbands represent the three adidas stripes. My friend, after Borg lost one of those USO finals, took the wristband after borg took them off and tthrew them to the floor. He later gave it to me , after much begging

Adidas? I never heard of Borg having an adidas endorsment? But what makes it even more intriguing is that the wristbands in the first and second picture are different ones. The stripes are thicker in the second picture.

Is your next thread going to be called "Borg's armband"?

I'll get it going for you, I remember back in the late 60's when he went swimming. he had these large orange armbands made I think by speedo:):)

Trust me they were adidas made wristbands. Nastase wore the same wristbands but they were black and white i.e.bwbwb. In the 70's and early 80's the manufacturers didn't dress the players completely from head to toe, so players mixed and matched item. For example Vitas Gerulaitis used to wear nike sneakers and converse socks with Tachini clothes.

Found them on a well-known auction site. Search this:

Great! So I asked the seller about the name of the brand. Here's what he answered:

"Hi, Yes you are right they are NOT Adidas. They were buy a SWEDISH COMPANY - called LITESOME thats the word underneath the SWEDISH CROWN."

Those aren't the original blue and yellow ones he wore, tho. You're speaking of two different designs.

These are the auction:

These are different.

Mouse over this ad, you'll see the Litesome crown.

If you search Litesome now, all you seem to get is results for...athletic supporters. who knew?

Obviously wearing Jockey there, but what is NEH? and it has the Bj on it.

Yes, you're right! So now it's sorted out. Pre 1979 ca, Borg wore Adidas wristbands, and 1979-1981 he wore Litesome. Obviously these wristbands seem extremely rare these days. Fila headbands are much easier to find at a reasonable prize.

NEH is a Swedish promotional clothing company. Borg used a BJ-branded headband when playing in Sweden, you can find a picture on their page: http://www.neh.se/index.php?page=history&PHPSESSID=217b62a5ceab3aa4edc2d48b1a1d167e

NEVER seen that before, and I thought I'd seen them all.

But what about these? Who makes 'em? (Or, MADE them.)

Don't know what brand those socks are. But Borg started using them for the 1981 season. Up until then he used Fila socks.

I'd say either they are Fila socks branded with the BJ logo, or they are NeH socks. But looking closely at the B and the J, they look more similar to the Fila design than the NeH one.

Have you seen those socks being sold at the well known auction site btw?

I have seen those- now that I think of it, I think the maker was DuParc. No connection to Fila.

Yes, that one is great. I can't believe those Neh headbands are so hard to find, especially since Neh claims on their website that it sold in the millions http://www.neh.se/index.php?page=history&PHPSESSID=217b62a5ceab3aa4edc2d48b1a1d167e

Personally, I doubt that it sold in the millions.

Back to the wristbands. I thought we'd agreed on that before 1979, Borg used Adidas wristbands, and before the 1979 season switched to Litesome, which he used for the rest of his active career.

Then I got a little suprised re-watching the 1977 Wimbledon-final, as I took a closer look at the wristbands, the Litesome logo was very obvious. Now I'm in doubt Borg ever used Adidas.

Here's a screenshot from the 1977 final:
