View Full Version : Why does this happen?

Can I ask a question? It seems that I'm always losing to players who have "inferior" technique......Why does it happen?!

The head coach in my club, who coached Ivanovic when she was 13.......I only found that out today! He also coached some german who reached No.9 in the world in the 80's I think.....has told me that I "have the shots", basically, but that my fitness, footwork and mental game let me down. As I've posted before, I have a shitty diet....bread, chips and corn flakes....and last january i tried bananas and eat them every once in a while and this january i tried porridge and eat that aswell. But apparently when I was a baby my dad said when they tried switching me over from milk I wouldnt eat baby food and would spit it out all the time! I've got some mental block....I don't eat meat, fruit or vegetables....will drink anything...and will eat the odd things like yoghurts etc. but once in a blue moon. So, basically, I'm 17 stone...around 3-4 stone overweight, probably slightly obese, and my diet effects my energy levels both physically and mentally......

my concentration is DISASTOROUS, probably as a result of my mental energy levels and, I think this in turn effects everything....my footwork...does who have seen it know how BAD that is!!!

But the thing is, I'm so lazy...so its like such an effort to fix it but I'm gonna start soon.

But seriously, back on topic....WHY?! I've been told that say I play a player, my technique is 10 times better yet I'd go out and lose......:? I've been told that I could be the best in my club, and our current no.1 who also coaches me a bit has told me the same and he lost 7-5, 7-6 to the guy that beat the Irish no.1, who is 280-300 in the world 7-6 in the 3rd in the close championships...so it would probably be 5.0-5.5 level I could reach......

So what is it...is it a combination of these mental, physical and footwork problems that kill me or whats the story?!

Maybe also, I'm told that when I step on court I play like Roger Federer's on the other end....go for the lines nearly always and as hard as I can....but I think this is tied into my fitness because I know if I dont then I mightnt get another chance and I make a HELL of a lot of unforced errors..and also I'm a perfectionist BUT, I'm also the definition of laziness so it's a bad matchup! Perfectionism and laziness...lol.....so basically, outside of my technique, my game is a vicious circle caused my one minor thing!

Is this why, in my case anyway, someone like me can lose to someone with inferior or very poor technique when yours in way better.
Please note, I'm not saying I'm "superman" technically, far from it, but that is my strong point....technique and feel, and a shotmaker really. It's getting annoying though losing to "nobodys" when I can be so much better.

Advice?

(stop talking, go out, eat right, get fit etc. or what?, is my analysis correct?)

my opinion is people may compliment you by saying you play like roger federer but it isn't true. only roger federer plays like roger federer.

sorry, i probably mis-read your post :)
anyway. in the beginning it wasn't easy for federer either. i watched a federer bio on tv and when he was younger, his parents gave him a goal: either reached the top level or quit tennis. at the time, federer didn't know he could do it but he did it through hard work.

You know why. You said so yourself in the first post.

You want to improve...ditch the crap, find good and healthy foods, eat a balanced diet, lose the weight, learn to keep the ball in the court.

If you want it bad enough, you'll do it. If you can't overcome your own admitted laziness, at least don't pretend that you don't know why you aren't winning.

Maybe you ought to read the thread on if technique is over-rated? Some people play like they imagine that they'll get rated like gymnasts and divers do. Tennis doesn't work that way. As Brad Gilbert pointed out, you can win ugly. What's important is being able to control where you put the ball. This doesn't mean that you're a "pusher" and only trying to land the ball smack in the middle of the court. To the contrary, ball control means that you can give it depth and aim near the sidelines without losing safety. In this way you can move your opponent around until you have a big enough opening for a winner. A winner which which only needs to be hit at 50 mph because of the size of the opening. You need to be able to hit drop shots and lobs when needed. These are 'touch' shots where technique alone won't give you success.

Are you able to hit targets more consistently than your opponents? If you can, then you should win and you need to re-think your strategy. But if your opponent can control the ball better than you, you won't be able to beat them until your aim gets better, no matter what your pro tells you about form.
