before he retires?

As a fan I would sure love to see it, but right now it would take a huge effort to achieve this.

For someone who has been such a presence is the sport and has so many fans, for him not to have won a tourny since the AO in 05 is so sad.

He is such an enigma that I know he has 1 more amazing run in a tournament somewhere, just not sure where.

So, what's your thoughts, can he do it? if so where do you think it might happpen.

Please no Safin slating in this thread, trolls stay away.

i saw one more amazing run in his future, then wimbledon 2008 happened, and i think that's him done. the mask has slipped to show a guy who doesn't quite have the fire to close out matches any more. a shame, but i see no more titles. if he is going to win one, the positive is that the american hardcourt season is coming up, and that should suit him best.

I like this guy alot---he's big and has all the strokes, but his head isn't always focused, as we all know. But, he can cleanly smash a racquet in 2 whacks. Currently he's ranked #22, with 4 wins and 6 losses this year on the tour. Isn't he still retiring in November? Santoro, too.
I'd like to see his exhibition match with Sampras at the ATP tournament in L.A. this July.

tour will definitely miss them. the true individuals, players and people, are getting thinner on the ground.

Maybe one last trick? How about withholding Nadal from winning the calendar Grandslam at the US Open?;)

that would be an amazing story. He would have messed with sampras, federer and nadal at that point.

a fitting end to a career that didn't have the medals but always produced the glory and emotion

I think Safin fans (and I am one) take the Wimbledon run for granite. I mean seriously, Marat Safin MADE IT TO A GRAND SLAM SEMI just last year. that is so impressive for someone who has been so up and DOWN since AO 05.

I really hope he can have a tournament victory, even at a 250, but honestly, Wimbledon 08 would be a nice cap to a mysterious career.

Safin's career has been over since 2005.

It would be so typical of him to win something, yet the way he's been playing, so impossible. Maybe there's some small tournament somewhere where he and Dinara could play doubles and she could close out the final set.

I hope he could get another USO, but it is no easy task. This would also mean a choke by Fed also...

I completely agree, and it's such a same. Even at 29, he has a lot left in the tank but mentally, he does not believe in his abilities and has the mental toughness of a baby. I love Safin, but if he does not really have the will to win, what else could push him over the top?

I really want to get behind him and support him, but he makes it impossible (for me atleast). I'm glad he is retiring in the sense that hopefully he can contribute to the game in other ways; such as commentating and being an ambassador and etc. I just hate to see him get burned out and wilt on tour all the time. So much potential has slipped away from him.

Sampras may have the titles, Roddick may have the serve, Nadal may have the arms but Safin had the best 2-handed backhand of all time :)
