What's the measure of fitness? Grinding out long wins? Nadal has to be the kind of long hard fought matches.

coria... he used to run around on the clay pulling heavy tires that were designed to dig into the ground. And he was only like 150 pounds. He was so fast.

Federer's fittness is highly underrated. I think even today he's, along with Nadal, the fittest player on tour. It's just that his head isn't fit.

Actually I think that Murray and Federer are up with Nadal.

In no particular order:

Lendl
Courier
Nadal
Muster
Borg

Bear in mind, drug usage was likely a factor for most of these players. Since drugs dont affect everyone in a universal manner, assumptions should not be made about respective fitness levels if they had played all-natural.

Why can't Murray be as fit as Nadal? Just because someone is as fit as someone else doesn't mean they are of equal standing in the sport as far as skill and ability is concerned.

Is this common knowledge? I'm not questioning it, I'm just wondering if it was widespread back then?

I agree. Courier was also an absolute animal in his prime.

Federer...never injured.

Not true. Ankle at the end of '05. Back problems at the end of '08 and beginning of '09.

All relatively minor problems. He almost won TMC with that ankle. End of '08 and '09 is not in Federer's prime, although he's still close to it.

Also, those haven't really kept him from playing that much; still at the biggest events.

End of 08 and beginning of 09 is not Federer's prime.

Courier, Lendl and Muster were beasts in their prime, yet i don't remember any player being able to recover as well as Nadal.

Hewitt trains in the soaring temperatures of the Australian summer. In the Aus Open 05, he played a couple of brutal 5 setters back to back, and seemed to get stronger as the matches went on. In addition, he has one of the best five set winning records amongst active players, and has comeback from two sets to love down on 5 seperate occasions.

Well, Borg. I believe he was measured as even fitter than the top cyclists and he had a resting heartbeat of 36 or something like that. Also, Nadal - stronger than Borg - depends what you call "fit." I was thinking the other day about whether there would be anyone who would be able to beat Nadal just by out-grinding him, wearing him out in long, long points. I thought of Muster, I would like to have seen them play - Nadal hopping around before the match and Muster standing over Nadal on the changeovers as he tries to organize his water bottles.

That list your refering to is rather absurd. Some did acknowledge using recreational drugs such as McEnroe, and more so Gerulaitis and even Wilander and Borg, but saying that these ones used performance enhancing drugs without clear evidence (besides which that is not the OPs question), facts and statistics is again: Absurd.

Back in the day, Lendl was regarded as one of the fittest players on tour, Muster as well. These days, of course, one would put Nadal up there, but overall I'd give it to Roddick or a Ferrer.

Vilas, Borg, Lendl, Muster, Agassi (Gil Reyes era), Courier, Murray, Nadal.

You saying Murray is fitter than Nadal is funny.
why not? Nadal is probably the unfittest player on tour according to his fanboys. Apparently, he loses all of his physical ability when he experiences altitude changes such as climbing stairs, going into elevators etc. haha

i'd say nadal, remember this years aussie
he has the most strength
chang was probably even faster than nadal but i think he didnt have as much strength as nadal
so my vote definitely goes to nadal
