There were a lot of aces, but the quality of everything else was pretty poor. Karlovic couldn't return for crap.

How could he beat the record by so much. Thats like someone suddenly running 100m in 7.5 seconds.

They decided to speed up the clay after Federer only won 4 games in the final.:)

Roddick also played 5 sets when he hit his 37 aces. The Roddick match had 56 games. The Karlovic match had 58 games if you count each tie break as another game. Karlovic already had 40 aces after 3 sets in this match!

Actually getting 55 aces when the previous record was 37 on clay is like someone suddenly running 100m in about 6 seconds.

There must be some finely shredded strands of grass in this new clay.

Do you actually have evidence to back up your statement? Or is this yet another one of your 'arguments' which aren't actually substantiated by any facts? Just because Karlovic fired many aces doesn't mean RG has sped up its clay. Wait a bit more before jumping to conclusions.

now that is ridiculous. not one of the best servers in tennis history serving 55 aces in a 5 setter, 3 tiebreaker match.

Most of the record-holding-ace matches are matches where the acing player loses.

Karlovic lost this one. Johansson lost in the match where he had 51 aces (in 4 sets, no less.) Karlovic lost in the one where he had 51 aces.

It's a pattern. The players go for so many big serves because they're so completely outplayed whenever the ball comes back, so they've got no choice but to try to rack up the aces. If Karlovic felt more confident in his volleys, he'd be able to go for a bit less on the serve, get a higher percentage in, and put away easy volleys. But he feels like if the ball is returned, he loses the point, so hence the ace stats.

It is Ivo Karlovic. He is not only a great server, but a terrible returner. No surprise that both stats were high. A 5 set match with 3 tiebreaks? I would have been surprised had he served under 50 aces.

or volley ball.. Watching Ivo play tennis bore me to death... Ivo may be a nice guy but with his tall structure playing tennis like a walking giant big foot holding a small stick.. 55 aces, 2 sets up and lost? that said it all about Ivo.. A serving machine without any strokes.. !!

If you look back over the record, you'll see something even more weird. In the vast majority (all but 1?) of the matches where the record for most aces was set...the guy who set it lost the match.

And now for something completely different...

This is one of the reasons why I contend, Karlovic has the greatest serve ever. To serve 55 aces against one of the best (if not the best) returner ever...on CLAY of all surfaces is plain ridiculous. Congrats to Hewitt for beating the big guy for the first time in 4 meetings.

Btw, at the end of the third set, Ivo already had 41 aces!

Johannson lost hitting 51 aces in 4 sets, although he was facing Agassi, probably one of the only players who had a better service return than Hewitt. As tall as Ivo is, it doesn't matter what kind of court he is playing on if his serve is on.

If you knew anything about tennis other than the goings-on of Rafa Nadal, you would know that all of the previous matches involving record setting #s of aces also ended in a LOSS for the record setting player.

Agassi d. Johansson 2005 AO (jj 51 Aces)

Kafelnikov d. Krajicek 1999 US Open (rk 48 Aces)

Magnus Norman d. Ivanisevc 1997 Wimbledon (gi 46 Aces)

Try learning more the sport instead of following Nadal like he is some kind of religion.

So if the clay dries out more quickly it plays more like a hard court? That seems sort of believable in terms of how some of the balls were coming off the court in the match I saw with Gulbis and Querrey.

Yes when it is hot and dry the ball really flies through the court.
