The Tennis Channel live streams early in the morning are much better; I can't stand the bias commentary on ESPN and the ticker tape taking up a portion of the screen. Let’s show tennis, no one cares about yesterdays street ball scores. Plus select better matches, they are tape delayed anyway.

I wish they were out of tennis!

I watched the TTC streams yesterday and the commentators were horrible.

The bottomline on ESPN barely takes up any of the screen and I'm not sure where you're getting these "street ball" scores from unless you're talking about basketball. Theres other sports out there besides tennis.

ESPN's idea of a perfect tennis broadcasting day:

Intro-commentators talk about Williams sisters' and Sharapova's chances at the tournament.

Full coverage of Williams match warmup.

Uninterrupted (except for commercials) coverage of Williams match (or Sharapova match).

On-court interview with Williams sister.

Off court press conference interview with Williams sister, or both is they are both available.

Commentary on Williams sisters chances next round.

5 minutes of coverage of extremely compelling ATP match in the 5th set.

Venus and Serena retrospective.

Coverage of Sharapova practicing for the next day's match.

Replay of Williams sister match, with full commentary and interviews.

Don't forget that every Serena or Venus interview must be shown live and preferably interrupting an ongoing match. Since, as you know, somehow the Wlliams sisters are not recordable with today's technology.

The thing that I can't stand on ESPN's coverage is that every day, after listening to McEnroe, I come on to TW and several people are quoting which rules were broken, which umpires screwed up, which players cheated because of the wrong information that he gives. I just wish that he would do something similar to baseball or football. If something happens, and he's not sure if it was done correctly, the producers should find the rule, or procedure and inform him, or post it on the screen so that millions of viewers aren't getting incorrect information.

Not sure if you guys noticed today as well - ESPN decided to broadcast the matches of the day in a smaller format with a big letterbox around it - with lots of unused room on the sides - and the ticker and other scores rather that just super-ing it over the bottom of the screen like they've done before...I mean who needs to use the entire screen right? Very strange. Never seen that before except when the feed wasn't in true HD - which this is...Gotta love'em!

At least with TTC they use the whole screen...

Here's my "hope they lose so espn shows other matches" list

{X}Blake
{}Roddick

If they are ever playing a match, espn will make sure you know about it.

I have no idea - I don't think so. It was still in HD and format. They haven't done that before - and of course for the interview segments and the birthday thing for Cliff was full 16x9 - so it was a choice. A bad one.

i'm just not as sure as espn seems to be that people will tune in (in droves) to watch a match that:

a) they've already seen live on another channel (or streamed online)
b) the know the outcome of (either because they watched it or got the score/recap from the official website)
c) isn't being played live (when the viewers know for certain that other live matches are being played in real time)

as far as i cam concerned live coverage should take precedence over everything else. i can think of no other sport shown on tv where they actually preempt showing something live in order to show something on tape. makes absolutely no sense, especially in our tech age.

i also gotta say that if god almighty was teamed up with elvis . . . and they were playing bigfoot and batman in the first round of doubles . . . $20 says that espn wouldn't show it. i mean, first round of doubles?? who cares?

tacou
05-26-2009, 05:30 PM
only thing that truly bothers me is how/when they show matches.

two specific examples today:
Williams Sisters doubles. I don't care if they are the Williams Sisters, there is no chance any woman's doubles match is going to attract new fans to the sport.

and then, either during Tsonga or Blake, P-Mac and some other fool were on screen talking for 5minutes while the match played on in the back-ground, sound only. what?? I want tennis! not talk about tennis! that's what this forum is for

right NOW, they have an excuse to go to taped matches . . . because they just suspended play due to darkness. they just wasted the last hour or so with crap they could have shown now.

i agree here, but without ESPN there would be no tennis in america except on ttc. and with their budget we would be watching 250s only.

The biggest problem is that amount of womens tennis they play, no offense to any hard working female players out there, but right now the WTA is a joke. Half the players can't move around the court or keep their ball toss on target.

If you watch in HD they downsample it and put it nearly in half-screen. I forgot to DVR the tennis channel coverage and am paying dearly for it :-(

As a tennis fan, I hate how they own the rights to all 4 majors but show them in such a ridiculous way. I did as well, probably got the same "form letter" reply as you? Here's what they wrote me:

"Thank you for writing.

We compress the video during our French Open telecasts to prevent our news and information service, the BottomLine, from obscuring the court. The BottomLine is a 24/7 service that fans expect and do tune in for.

We appreciate your giving us the opportunity to respond to your concern and have shared your message with the appropriate executives.

Sincerely,

My initial complaint was polite, my reply to their reply was, well, outraged that they knowingly take standard TV, compress it, to make sub-standard TV. I can barely track the ball in their French open coverage.....
