What modifications does Roddick make on the Pure Drive because I hit with it the other day and I can't believe that Roddick, with all his natural power, could not hit every shot long with a stock Pure Drive. Does anyone know?

There is thread containing weight, balance and pictures of one of his and Moya's racquet up close. Roddick's just has a little bit of lead added near the top. Moya has a lot more added under the top bumper.

And yes Roddick's stick is pretty damn close to stock. Look at the buckets of topspin he puts on the ball, or basically how much spin in general is on every shot and you will realize how the ball stays in the court as you watch him tee off on every shot.

Actually during the match between Roddick and Moya showed Roddicks racket up close. The camera was shootin' through the strings. I saw hella lead on the sides but none on the top. Same with Safin hella lead on the sides...

It seems that the pros that do put the lead at the tip of their frames generally do it under the bumper guard. I am sure Roddick's setup could have changed since I last saw the photos but the photos were clear and up close.

So how much weight are we talking here? How much would it weigh strung?

My coach told me that Roddick put so much tape on it that it made it Head-Heavy. Is this true?

I just saw an up close shot of Roddick's racquets and you are right, it did look like he had lead tape on the sides of the racquet head. I am not sure of the head heavy thing but I know for sure Moya's racquets are head heavy.

If I remember correctly, Roddick's racquets are about 17 grams heavier than stock, with almost exactly the same balance.

but moya uses a bab. soft drive though, its not as heavy as a pure drive stock, so it wouldnt take as much lead to make it head heavy.

No, it's the first PD (no woofer) with 2003 cosmetics, same as Clijsters. The Soft Drive was way back circa 1997... And it is LOADED all around the head.

What is the soft drive? TW only has pure drive.

You don't need a closeup to see the lead at 3 and 9 on Roddick's racquet. You also have to remember the guys strings it so tight it probably feels like hitting with a piece of plywood. In the photos provided by TW it showed at least one of his racquet was strung as high as 80 lbs. I think Moya may have a heavier frame but he strings around 60lbs, right?

Roddick: 310 gr. unstrung, 330 mm balance, 70 cm length
Moya: 310 gr. unstrung, 365 mm Balance, 68,5 cm length

Data as of Monte Carlo 2003

The Pure Drive and (my choice) The pure drive team + have lead tape already placed in the top so maybe that's why Roddick doesn't put it at the top

Roman Prokes cusotmizes it personally, there wont be any lead tape on the racquet. he gets just the basic frame of the racquet then he adds the amount of weight that roddick wants. trust i held roddicks racquets before the us open and talked with Roman

Why is he stringing without pulling the tension on each string first?

is that a trick question? could it be speed!

It looks like he just weaves the mains first then pulls. You can see that he starts in the middle like he should since the strings in the middle have been pulled.

Some stringers like doing the weaving first then the pulling. They say it's faster that way. I've tried both ways and honestly don't see much of a difference.

Can you tell if he's using the cortex?I saw some photos with the cortex seeing on his racquet but almost covered by the overgrip;or maybe it's a pj of cortex?

Roddick definately uses a PJ of the cortex. Tennis mag had a pic of his racquet on a stringer with no grip on it and you could see it was just paint where the cortex should be.

if you look where its supposed to say 'powered by woofer', it isnt there. thats one reason why folk think he isnt using woofer. in actual fact it is there, but he has lead tape covering it up if you look. im not trying to prove that he does use woofer because i dont know.. but he deffo uses lead tape
