Points Scoring Rules: (MUST READ)
If you predict the correct winner but the wrong score in sets, you'll get two points. However, if you also nail the score line in sets, (ie, Nadal beats Murray 2 set to love) you’ll get five points. Each predictor can pick the winner and runner up of the tournament (approximately a day before the FIRST ROUND MATCH)

Come the conclusion of the tournament – ten points will be given to each predictor that predicts BOTH the correct winner and runner up and five points for the one or the other.

FROM THE QUARTER FINALS! Predictor's are also now able to take a stab @ the range in how many games shall be played in each match..

For example... Nadal v Verdasco - Nadal wins 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2

This match would've consisted of 45 games ... if someone has a prediction for the range of games for this match being 45-50 games.. they'll score an additional 5 points.

These ranges can be from 12-17 or 66-71 even .. as long as they are within 5s

^^This gains you an extra 2 points.

If you grasp a sudden urge to change one or more predictions that you may already have posted, please make a new post, so I am aware of the time it was posted and can validate that the prediction was made before the respective match / matches. (Editing posts makes matters complicated)

^^I appologise for that, he should be released on probation just before Wimbledon i suspect.

If he tries pulling any stunts in the Wimbledon thread .. he'll definetely be disqualified, there's no way hes gonna ruin my favourite tournament of the year.

I apologize for my part in the gj fiasco. Things got way out of hand, and I should have realized earlier that I was arguing logic with a person that doesn't understand logic. None of those shenanigans anymore, or else, as TM said, he will be banished from the game!

batz
06-07-2009, 03:53 AM
Woaah there guys - no need for the mass apologies. I don't share the antipathy for gj that many on this site do but there's no doubt in my mind he was the catalyst for the FO thread becoming something it wasn't meant to be - boring.

Hopefully we've all learned form the experience.

Anyone got the fixtures for tomorrow's play?

I don't see it out yet. Probably once today's qualies end.

Here's Halle's:

Hanescu (ROU) - Becker (GER)
Kunitsyn (RUS) - Tursunov (RUS)
Hernych (CZE) - Berdych (CZE)
Serra (FRA) - Sela (ISR)
Haas (GER) - Koubek (AUT)
Schüttler (GER) - Gicquel (FRA)

(There's a TBA in there that might come up.)

Why is this Stella Artois instead of AEGON after Stella Artois decided to abandon poor Queens? I'm not looking forward to blue either. I'll miss the red.

No offense to Fed, just think he might run out of gas after the most emotional win of his career. Or he might just pull out before play starts.

Just looking at the early Halle matches I've realised how hard it is to pull my head out of clay mode now!

Before I go making my winner pick, can I check that if Roger was to pull out of Halle (long FO for him, might need some time off to recover) before playing and we'd chosen him that we'd get a chance to change our winner/r-u predictions?

I must say I'm a freaking moron. The entire time we were predicting games for FO, I thought it was just the amount games the winner wins, not the entire thing.

WOW! In my defense, I got confused with all the arguing that went on.

No votes as were discussed last time?

The problem with these rules is that they give the FEWEST POINTS to guessing who the WINNING PLAYER will be. That should be the HIGHEST rating, not the lowest, in my opinion!

otherwise, it's too much like what the online betting sites do to provide more juice to online gamblers.

i liked it better when it was less similar to online gambling. has it always given the fewest points to guessing the winner???

Congrats to TM on your win. Like Fed you seem to peak at the grand slams ;). I would also apologize for my part in the gj011 fiasco which somewhat tainted the tournament and turned people away.

For future tournaments we should have some way to decide ties so that victories are more like they are in real life. For example you have an outright winner not two (or three).

Also is there going to be two different sets of points for the two grass tournaments or is it a combined event?

Also is there going to be two different sets of points for the two grass tournaments or is it a combined event? We can have a tie breaker question I suppose. I'm fine with shared victories, personally, not that I've ever been close to one.

For Halle/Queens, I thought it would be combined points. But I see that T_M has two separate winners and runner up in the opening post, so I don't know. I'll do the scores accordingly I suppose.

I agree, TM. Your rules. Your game. Your win.

You can say, "Because I said so," if that's all you got. "I'm the daddy" or as per lewis carroll's queen in Alice and Wonderland, "All ways here are the queen's ways"!!!

TM, can you or ANYBODY explain to me why the fewest number of points a predictor can win are awarded for correctly predicting the actual winner of the match?

I'll continue reading the posts, but so far I have not seen an answer to that one, simple question. And since you made the rules, TM, I was truly hoping that you would be able to explain why you made it that way?

Because in the real life game of tennis, it's who wins the match that counts most, not by how large a margin s/he wins. ..... All I want to know is why, TM??? :?: :???:

thanks anyway, CK, but I find it's a lot easier to get a straight answer about X when it comes from the person who said X, him/herself. No offense, but I'll wait to hear from TM.

i know i wrote "or anybody," but remember the last time you answered for TM? I appreciate your trying, but IIRC, we ended up going back and forth multiple times and never ended up getting the question answered. remember that? the question where i was asking about the numbers of sets, but you thought i was asking about the numbers of games?

Sorry, i am completely baffled as to what the question is? If you predict the winning player you recieve 2 points, in turn predicting the winning player as well as the correct number in sets that player wins in, you recieve 5 points.

I don't understand what you mean to be frank.

Care to elaborate?

LoveGame, i am not sat @ my laptop all day every day @ the ready for replies on the competition.

I'm not here chastising the rules for reasons as biggotry as those you listed, if thats how you feel however, your more than free to not play.

The reason you get more points for predicting the scoreline than the winner itself, is pretty obvious, i would believe. You have a larger margin for error when predicting the winner of a match, whereas when its down to the scorelines, the margin for error is less.

Towards the end of the last prediction thread (after you stopped reading) many came to an agreement on a vote to NOT increase the points scale, to NOT include the women's game and to only include the 2 extra bonus points for predicting games system from the quarter finals onwards.

Thanks a lot man! :) This turned out much more to of a success than i initially planned for. The amount of player's playing and the level of committment in to making their predictions on a daily basis.

Seffina's deserves a lot more credit than i do tbh, making those calculations everyday can seem like a chore and she does them without a fuss and in style.

Towards the end of the last prediction thread (after you stopped reading) many came to an agreement on a vote to NOT increase the points scale, to NOT include the women's game and to only include the 2 extra bonus points for predicting games system from the quarter finals onwards.

whoa ... don't taze me, bro! where are you getting that defensive attitude? not from my post! :???:

simple one question please.

if a player wins you give me 2 points,
then you add 3 EXTRA points if I guess the exact number of sets, regardless of whether it's 3 sets or 5 sets, right?

this is my question (and i really do not know where you got the rest of that stuff from): Should I not get the 3 points for predicting the winner correctly and and 2 EXTRA points for guessing the number of sets correctly?

that's my question, plain and simple.
you have the situation reversed to what I'm asking.
and i'm hoping you can explain without being insulting, because unlike you, i am not a gambling maven?

if that's threatening to you, I apologize! :(

Likewise on your win.

Good idea, put idea's forward for that man.

There are going to be 2 different sets of points for Queens and Halle, different tournament, different leaderboard. Oh good this will be very interesting.

As for the tie-breaker does anyone have any ideas? Maybe the number of matches picked correct in a tournament? For example in a GS there is 127 games I think. I could get 118/127 right but not many of them may be 5 pointers. You could get 100/127 but a majority could be 5 pointers. In the event this is tied it could be most number of 5 pointers, if thats tied then 2 pointers, then game round highs...

Anyone agree/disagree/have an improvement on this? I would happily do it if it was too much work for Seffina.

If there's a tie, it could be whoever picks the winner correctly of the tourney? Or whoever's winner pick gets further?

Another idea is whoever did better on more days, i.e. if TM got a better score than CK on 4 of the 7 days of picks, TM would be the winner.

I have a suggestion: if there is any vote to be taken, let's not force ourselves to read through every, single post, watching conversations back and forth about pros and cons and then somehow missing out on the actual vote itself.

the only way i know of to do this is for the OP to place all issues up for vote into the OP via editing so that we who are participating can find it easily and have a chance to vote.

i've never seen a complete tally of any vote yet, so this is why i'm hoping we can find a way to avoid missing out on the actual vote when it occurs. depending on the numbers of participants it does make a difference how many of them actually get their votes recorded.

As for why picking sets is worth more than just predicting the result, I assume it's because it's significantly harder.

As for why picking sets is worth more than just predicting the result, I assume it's because it's significantly harder.

is that an answer to my question?
because if it is, here's my response:

A. Imagine a scenario in which I predict with total accuracy the numbers of sets won PLUS the exact numbers of games played PLUS the exact score of every, single game.

B. Now imagine in addition that I predict the wrong winner.

==========

see what I mean?
* yes, A is more difficult.
* but, A is worth nothing (absolute zero) if B is also true.
* Bottom line: It is WORTH MORE to predict the winner, because without it, you get ZERO.

* to put it another way: failure to predict the correct winner (regardless of whether or not it's easier to do) is MORE COSTLY (value-wise) than failure to predict the sets, etc.

IOW, the VALUE of predicting the winner is HIGHER than the value of predicting the sets (explained above).

that is to say: the choice of the winner is the sine qua non (or as my mom says, "the which there is nothing than whicher"), the essential ingredient without which NO points will be amassed at all.
____________
therefore, it makes the most sense (to me anyway) to assign to it the highest numerical value.
-------------

obviously, Tennis Maestro might have a better explanation for doing it the opposite way, which is why I would like to wait for TM's explanation.

i agree that it seems there might be a need to, as you say, "boost the points in later rounds," because of the fact that as the rounds progress there are fewer and fewer matches, thus yielding fewer and fewer points as the finals draw nearer.

but isnt that really more a psychological problem than anything else? because every predictor is the same relative to every other predictor in that regard. iow, we're all in the same boat of piling up less and less points PER DAY. But what's really wrong with that anyway? If there are fewer matches, it's natural that there will be fewer guesses and therefore fewer points.

I can't help thinking that picking the winner should be given more points right from the beginning, such as, say, 5. I remember quoting one of your suggestions from the previous thread that I thought was very sensible. I'll try to find it.

I think why picking the winner is given less points than picking the number of games is because that's easier to do EX Nadal VS Soderling. Who would have thought that Robin will pull this off? Naturally you'll predict Nadal in 3 and never Soderling in 3 correct?

Dimitrov_Fan, I believe you picked Roger and Tsonga as the winner/runner up at Halle. They're both in the same half, so you should probably change that.

--------------
Love_Game, I see what you're asking, but you're incorrect to say that picking the winner is rewarded the least amount of points. We don't get 3 points for just picking the correct amount of sets. Someone has to pick the correct WINNER and the correct number of SETS to get five points. Thus, the reward that you get for the sets is predicated on picking the correct winner. It's part of the reward of picking the winner. The point increase is because it is difficult to do both. If we were just awarding points for picking the correct amount of sets (no matter the winner) then it would make sense to have that part of the prediction be worth less, but it's the perfect combination of two that gets you the maximum points. One could give three points for picking the correct winner and then two more points for picking the correct amount of sets, but it's not rewarding the difficulty of the proper combination enough. Some winners are completely gimmes, but what difficulty will they have with their opponent is measured through the sets.

This league has absolutely nothing to do with gambling. We're testing our tennis prowess against fellow participants. No reason to bring gambling up.

------------------

For the tiebreaker, I like a lot of the ideas including winning percentage. When I input the scores, I input 0s for any match you didn't get correct, so I do have a record of how many matches you got right and how many you didn't. I also like the head to head highest score thing as well. I'll try and think up a couple of others.

Love_Game, I see what you're asking, but you're incorrect to say that picking the winner is rewarded the least amount of points.

i dont understand that statement, since 2 is the "least amount of points" awarded and 2 is also "the amount of points awarded for picking the winner," so A = B and B = C: A = C.

but nevermind that now. thank goodness youre articulate, seffina. i do appreciate you for that!:)

i have a favor to ask, and i promise not to ask this again, but would you (just this once), PLEASE post your calculation of my scores for today, Monday?

Thanking you in advance,
as that will help me finally understand. http://i39.tinypic.com/v8ng1w.gif

i dont understand that statement, since 2 is the "least amount of points" awarded and 2 is also "the amount of points awarded for just picking the winner," so A = B and B = C: A = C.As I said before, a basic syllogism doesn't work here because picking the winner is a precondition for earning any further points. You don't get anything for picking the correct sets, thus, it's not worth more than just picking the winner. So if you wanted to put this is in syllogism format, 0 is the "least amount of points" awarded when you picked the correct amount of sets but not the correct winner. In that case your syllogism would be A = B and C = D... and you can't go anywhere from there. Anyways, we'll leave it for now.

not that it signifies one, single thing, but i dont believe your analysis is correct. i'm sorry to disagree with you, but it's not in the interest of the thread to pursue it (or any other opinion requiring the presentation of logical argument) further, since no discussion of whys or wherefores signifies anything in a closed system. fwiw (0), my equation was based on the form of the algebraic equation, not on the form of the syllogism, but as I wrote previously, "nevermind that now ." http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/im/k.gif

For the tiebreaker, I like a lot of the ideas including winning percentage. When I input the scores, I input 0s for any match you didn't get correct, so I do have a record of how many matches you got right and how many you didn't. I also like the head to head highest score thing as well. I'll try and think up a couple of others.

I'm content with the win percentage idea, if most people are in favour of it, i suppose we can deploy it.

I love this prediction game. It's fantastic. Where's the faith in my man Feli? :p The man has game! (I think he'll lose tomorrow too, but I couldn't resist)

I know! I really think his game is well suited on grass than any other surface. I think he's good contender here in queens.

FROM THE QUARTER FINALS! Predictor's are also now able to take a stab @ the range in how many games shall be played in each match.

Says we're doing games on pg 1, so I guess we do games.

Halle-Quarterfinals
Kohlschreiber d. Beck in 2 - (18-23)
Rochus d. Becker in 3 - (28-33)
Haas d. Zverev in 2 - (18-23)
Djokovic d. Melzer in 2 (18-23)

I thought it was a GS thing as well. Also, if we're predicting them here, I don't see how we can have more than 26 games in a two set win. 6+7+6+7 = 26. The lowest you can go is 12. Two set ranges should be from 12-26. Three set predictions will range from 18 to 39. Anyways with only 14 different game outcomes for a two setter, a six number range is really easy to predict. The range should probably be a little smaller if we're doing this. Honestly, I would rather not for non-grandslam events. :)

Sorry to bring up rules and stuff again.

We can scrap the game range predicting, its not that of any real importance.

Keeping it for purely the Slams seems a better option. Is there anyone that would rather we kept the game predictions for non-slam events as well?

Two set ranges should be from 12-26. Three set predictions will range from 18 to 39. Anyways with only 14 different game outcomes for a two setter, a six number range is really easy to predict. The range should probably be a little smaller if we're doing this. Honestly, I would rather not for non-grandslam events.

I tend to go along with the above.

Like T_M said I also seem to be falling apart in the grass season.

Only goes to show that we need a longer grass season 3 weeks is really not enough.

Just a side note, does AEGON own Britain now? They have the sponsorships of all 3 of the Grass tuneups in England, the 2 this wk and the tourney in Eastbourne next week. That's a lot.

AEGON Championships-Queens
AEGON Classic-Birmingham
AEGON International-Eastbourne

I guess the AEGON Open and AEGON Invitationals are next.

thejoe and theduh, I think you both just had one really bad day that has gotten you so low. Conversely, I've had one good day that has me in a very, very, very slim lead.

Blake in 3 (not because I think he'll win, but it's only chance I have of moving up.)
Djokovic in 2.

-------
T_M, those are the scores according to the rules we all agreed on a few tournaments back. I've listed them a couple of times to make sure everyone's okay with them. I have no preference one way or other, but we've all benefited or lost out based on them. I don't think it would it would be fair to change them mid tournament because they've been used to determine points so far, but I'll list them again if we want to change them after this tournament.

1. If there is a walkover, the match is void.
2. If there is a retirement, and you picked the person that doesn't retire, you get 2 points. No matter the sets or score.
3. If there is a lucky loser situation (like what happened with Safin this tourny), and you picked the person the lucky loser replaced and the lucky loser wins, you get points accordingly (2 for correct winner, 5 for correct winner and set). If you picked the opponent and they win, you get points accordingly.

----------
Again, I have no problem with changing them. As far as the retirements, if we're going to make one void, then we should probably make them all void as there's no way of saying a person wouldn't have come back even if they are down 0-6, 0-5 when they retire.

I'll change the scores if you guys really feel like we should change the rule, but as I said above, I don't think it would be fair to do so mid tourny.
-----------

Also, depending on the time the matches end, I might not be around to do the scores until late. I'm hoping they end before I head out, but we shall see.

Fair enough if those were the rules agreed @ that time, looking @ posts overall it seemed the general consensus was if you picked the person that hadn't retired and was 1 set up or a few breaks up then you would recieve those 2 points.

I'm open minded the retirement policy we already have going i suppose, although with the scenario you produced 0-6, 0-5 and a retirement, technically the player could make the come back but realistically he wouldn't.
