View Full Version : Sampras Calls Federer "Greatest Ever"

"What he's done over the past five years has never, ever been done — and probably will never, ever happen again," Sampras said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Regardless if he won there or not, he goes down as the greatest ever. This just confirms it."
Well, it's over guys. Federer has accomplished more in tennis than any men's player in the history of the game. I'm glad to say that it couldn't have happened to a nicer champion.
I thank you all for participating on this forum. In particular, I'd like to thank the TW Historians and aficionados, who, over the past couple of weeks, have taught me that Federer is barely top 10 in the history of the game, that Rod Laver would beat Federer with a wooden racquet (Federer is using his K90 in the scenario), and that I'm "very pathetic" (this poster then proceeded to incorrectly point out my "misuse" of the word "jive") :-) .
I'll leave you all with some reading:

Sampras said. "I'm a huge Laver fan, and he had a few years in there where he didn't have an opportunity to win majors. But you can't compare the eras. And in this era, the competition is much more fierce than Rod's."

That's because Federer *IS* the greatest ever. Nobody will accomplish what he has accomplished again. We have witnessed in the last 4-5 years the type of tennis dominance that will never again be repeated.

I always thought Sampras was the greatest, it was fantastic to be growing up when he was creating history.
Federer has just over taken him though in my eyes. Sampras said he was GOAT even if he didn't win RG today but I had to disagree, now he's got it in the locker though, Sampras is bang on.

I really don't see what good all the GOAT-talk does. I don't really care, just enjoy this moment, a great moment and don't make it one to get your revenge and point out to people how right you were about Federer being the best ever.

You do realize that lines such as "Nobody will accomplish what he has accomplished again" has been said in pro sports decade after decade, only to see past accomplishments surpassed.
..and while Roger is on his way to being the GOAT (male) with numbers of slams won, few records stand forever.

Roger has been in the last 20 STRAIGHT Slam semifinals. That's DOUBLE what the next nearest player accomplished. I am going to go out on a limb and say that will never be broken.
And aside from Nadal, has won every Slam final that he's been in for the last 5 years. That's another record that will never be broken.
He SHOULD get 15 or more slams. And he should do it in far less time than Sampras did (5 years for Federer vs. 10 years for Sampras). Nobody will repeat that.
You can shake your head all you want and talk about how records don't stand forever. But I'm telling you right now that you will never see another player dominate like Federer over a continous 5-year period. Never.
I agree, and i'm so glad i witnessed a player like Federer make history.
He has sparked my enthusiasm for the game to a new level.

His tennis may be accomplished, but he's got a big wife.
She needs to start getting in shape.

I know she's pregnant, but she's been pretty rotund for years now.

good quote from the BBC commentator yesterday, "the great champions are not just the ones who win everything, but the ones that leave the game better than it was before them. Certainly Roger Federer has achieved that."

Who cares? If Fed doesn't care why do you care? It's not like you're with her all the time and besides slim almost skeletal girls aren't everyone's cup of tea.

That is very true. Excellent analysis, that. Fed has definitely taken tennis up to a new level.

I read Roy Emerson said the same thing (Fed = GOAT), which was telling considering he played in the Laver era.

6 year-end number 1. Almost 300 weeks at the top. 7 Wimbledon titles. If Fed can't topple that, then he will never be the real GOAT.

Sampras isnt the GOAT standard and never was. Laver is. With Federer equaling Sampras's slam tally and winning the Career Slam with a far better record on clay than Pete, Pete is just even further removed from any GOAT discussion other than in the eyes of his die hard fans. Even Pete himself seems to know this.
