The new point system in ATP was designed to give advantage to title winners, particularly grand slam winners.

It's like:
Grand Slam Win : Now - 2000 Earlier - 2000 (i.e double of 1000)
Runner up: Now - 1200 Earlier - 1400
Semis: Now - 720 Earlier - 900
Quarters: Now - 360 Earlier - 500
4th Round: Now - 180 Earlier - 300

For Masters - 1000 tournaments, the points are divided by 2, for 500 divided by 4 and divided by 8 for 250.

It's all done to ensure that title winners especially Slam winners get enormous advantage. So not much advantage in going to slam quarters. You are a huge 1440 points behind the winner.

But still, if Federer wins Wimbledon and Nadal makes finals/semifinals, Federer would still be No. 2 despite holding 3 slams and 1 slam final (a huge 7200 points).

Maybe this will let Nadal scale back on his playing schedule some since he can mainly just contend the slams and a few warm-ups and still be competitive in the rankings so that we get to watch him more consistently for more years (assuming NBC deigns to grace us with actual matches to watch...)
