View Full Version : Having trouble hitting through ww forehand

Before my ww forehand was loopy (almost like a moon ball) and did not penetrate the court, landing by the service line for my opponent to kill. I now know that it is because put my effort into putting topspin on the ball and that's why the ball doesn't go straight forward but it just pops up and lands helplessly by the service line. People tell me to put my body into the shot, that I'm trying to much and actually rotating away from the shot and I think that helps.
However the biggest thing that everyone tells me to do is to hit through the ball more. I just can't do this, period. It sounds easy to do but I can't figure out how... When ever I try to do it I start to frame a lot of balls and it just doesn't feel natural. What am I missing?

I'm quite the opposite atm. My ww is penetrating through the court with little spin and i'm having difficulty to get more topspin .
Hitting through the ball is easier with a more horizontal swing path, so instead of brushing up so much by swinging up or vertically, try to hit straighter with a more horizontal swing path and you should be hitting through the ball easier. For consistency you need to find the swing path that gives you enough spin and pace by changing it and see which one suits you the best and use that for consistency, loopers for when you need to, and flatten out the ball more during a kill swinging more horizontally.
Oh also don't forget to turn your shoulders perpendicular to the net and turn your hips and load energy in your leg.

Leaning your body into the shot will cause it to penetrate more and leaning back will cause it to be more loopy.
Watch guys like federer and he really leans into the shot when he wants to penetrate his shot.

Leaning your body will cause you to get offbalance, which is bad. Stepping into your shot will get it to be more penetrating, especially when transitioning to net. Hitting off your back foot causes your strokes to be more loopy and defensive. (Not always though)

Hey Alex,
You may want to try getting extra low and rotating into the shot. Maybe try using less of your arm to hit through the ball. Instead let the ball go farther to the side of you and use your body to rotate into it instead. After all if you hit the ball to far in front of you it means you have already swung and can't actually hit through it. I've always been confused when people have told me to make contact in front and hit through the ball in the same sentence. It doesn't really make sense. And when you rotate it's generally ok to rotate away from the ball like you had mentioned. By letting ball come back farther you will still get a clean contact and be able to adjust away from the ball if you line up to close. Happy Fourth of July. Best Wishes

When making contact you just want to make contact out in front of you. It's much easier to do it this way. If you make contact far too forward, you run the risk of not aligning properly towards the ball.

timming, you have to touch the ball first then ww follow, not the otherway around. can be solved just to hit closer to your body.
