View Full Version : Kick Serve (edberg style)

Recently I've been modelling my kick serve in the Edberg way, with quite an arch back. And paired with a very fast racket head speed, I'm getting the desired amount of head speed.

However, I woke up (after playing a doubles match last night) this morning and my lower back was very stiff? Is it likely to continue or will this go away as I continue to serve more and more in this way.

I know it's a difficult question to answer, but what do you guys think?

I think it's likely that the pain will ease in time. The likelihood is, your back muscles aren't used to lots of use like they would get when you're serving. Try and persevere with the technique for a while if it works for you and the pain should go eventually as your body gets used to the technique.

Edberg was blessed with a super bendy back by the tennis gods. There is no doubt that such a serve can cause problems to mortals who try to emulate it.

To avoid injuries, it is better to bend your knees a lot more and keep your back straight.

Get the heels off the ground. This should facilitate a good knee bend with only minimal arching of the back.

NO static stretches right before tennis. Dynamic before, static after.

Slightly off topic: I believe Djokovic also bends his back more than most on the kick serve, is this accurate?

When I do this, I find it's easier to hit the ball wide on the ad side/to the T on the deuce side so I think it's worth emulating this technique. It does tend to make me sore early in the season.

I just watched a couple of videos of Edberg and did not really see a whole lot of back arch. I did see a good deal of body coil and knee bend but he laid back with his back fiarly straight rather than arching it. Perhaps you are implementing the Edberg serve incorrectly. Getting the heels off the ground will probably facilitate the proper laying back technique.

To me - what was distinctive of the Edberg serve was how far forward he tossed the ball, and then curled out and under the ball to hit the kick with a lot of pace- This is what I would focus on and not the back arch (unless you want to develop the bad habit of tossing too far behind your head.)

To the OP or others: Do you have any videos of Edberg where he appears to be arching his back? Take a look at the graphic below. I know, it's Boris Becker, not Stefan Edberg. But I've posted it (yet again) to illustrate how the knees are bent, with heels off the ground, so that his backside lays back straight rather than arched:

Looks like I was wrong, the back arch in Stefan's serve is not as pronounced as I thought it was. I must have it confused with someone else :oops:

My unprofessional opinion says to try the form for another couple weeks if the pain continues, i suggest you try lobbing and hitting the ball more to the right

I thought I read somewhere on these boards that Stefan had back problems later in life.
I could be wrong.

Early in his career he really arched his back quite a bit...
Then the 90s came and he had a back injury...
Had to modify his serve somewhat...

^ Interesting stuff. Where did you find this info? Assuming this is all true, this serves as a cautionary tale. Caution: The surgeon general had determined that excessive back arch during the execution of tennis serve may lead to lower back damage.

I took a look at some of his serving in a 1988 Wimbledon final against Becker (1st link below). Did not see much of an arch there. However, I also dug up some stuff that was earlier than that. It does appear that that was somewhat more back arch there. Take a look at the serve near the end of the 2nd video below:

I would keep in mind that Edberg probably served 500 times, if not more, every single day. That is a lot compared to what juniors and club players hit.
So the stance might be the problem, but the excessive use could also be another problem.
