I don't know if you can be a "worst" player to reach a Slam final

How about Makalai Washington or whatever his name was at Wimbeldon in the 90s reaching the semis.

How the hell did that guy make it that far? He must have had a hell of a slam

Lol, Malivai, yes that would be a good contender.

Apparently the semi against Kevin Curren was a good match...according to someone I know. What's your opinion?

First of all, Malivai Washington was a good player -- he was career high #11 in the world and had decent showings at limited GS (QF Aus Open). He benefitted greatly from a weakened 96 Wimbledon draw -- the only seed he beat prior to the semis was Enqvist, and then he beat Todd Martin in the semis after Martin admittedly choked a 5-2 lead in the 5th set.

Still, he made the US Olympic team in 96 and was a top-20 player, so he's far from the wost finalist in history. Chris Lewis and others were far worse.

Anytime you make a Slam final, it is a tremendous achievement. However, considering how Lewis did other than that event, I'd have to say he was the worst finalist IMO.

Yeah, might be that way, Mcenroe was on fire in that final but Lewis really just laid down and died in that match

Don't you mean "What kind of era does a clown like Malivai Washington make a Wimbledon Final?" At least that would be your response if he made it during the 2000s. ;)

I'll have to watch that final. The score was something like 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, wasn't it?

This is a hard question. I am going to say Martin Verkerk, Malivai Washington, or Chris Lewis for the men.

Philipousis? Definitely not. Philipousis was an underachiever if anything, not a bad player. Was up a set on Sampras @ Wimby 99 QF before he hurt his knee and had to retire. Philipousis always had the talent to make a run at a slam.

Philippoussis is far from the worst player to reach a slam final but I dont neccessarily consider him one of the best to not win a slam either. I always found him overrated.

DEFINITELY NOT...he made the 98 US Open final (lost to Rafter) in addition to the 03 Wimbledon final, beat prime Sampras on HC at 96 Aus and (as previously mentioned) was up a set on Sampras in 99 Wimbledon before having to retire.

Not sure about worst woman to make a slam final...

Up to last week, you'd have to say Bartoli (07 Wimbledon)...probably still is the worst.
But Zvereva (88 French) and Huber (96 Australian) are up there

Alberto Berasategui (FO 94)... Martin Verkerk (FO 2003)...
