I have been watching the US Open series and have become increasingly annoyed with Brad Gilbert. I used to enjoy his commentary but the guy wears on you quickly. He always has to be so cute with his player nicknames and tennis slang. I wish he would just shut up and hand the mic to Cahil. Anyone agree or do you think I am way off base?

Thankfully I watch the british commentary by Jason and Robbie. So much better.

You have to respect what Gilbert did - took his own very limited game into the top 10, then took two bundles of talent named Agassi and Roddick, and coached both of them to #1. So he does have a lot of knowledge about the game and its players. But he can wear out his welcome sometimes too. One announcer I never get tired of is Darren Cahill.

I like Mr. BG. He brings some humor to the telecast with his commentary and sometimes downright stupidity. I sometimes refer to him as the Charles Barkley of tennis as they both say some ridiculous things.

If you want to talk about annoying, Shriver and Carillo are infinitely more annoying than Gilbert, but I think that's already been talked about a lot here.

Of course, as mentioned, the team of Koenig and Goodall are the best.

I find Brad Gilbert entertaining and informative with great insight. Cahill on the other hand annoys me, He's ok, but after while those accents get old. I can say the same of Cliffy.

I do agree that Gilbert does have a vast amount of tennis knowledge and insight. I just wish I heard more of that and less of his senseless chatter.

You mean Gilbert's american accent or Cahill's Australian accent? ;-)

The actual dialogue might be better but those horrible British accents hurt my brain...

those two are crap commentators imo, especially robbie, always talking about his "6 inch stilletos" and "in the locker room when you beat someone 3 times, they are called your pidgeon" ... something he said while commenting the roddick/delpotro match (the 3rd time delpo beat roddick) ... EXTREMELY unprofessional.

==========

that said, this thread does not belong in the MATCH RESULTS forum since it is not about match results ... duh ... http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_19_1.gif

I am not a big fan of American commentators favoritism to American players. If you saw a tennis match for the first time you would think Roddick is number one and Querry is number two.

i've heard no evidence of that, but then when watching online (which is 95% of all i watch), there's almost never an american commenting ...... now that's "favoritism" and "bias" on the part of the "ATP"

just got done listening to a replay of the last 2 sets of karlovic/monfils, and the commentary was by gimmelstob and adler ...... they stuck to the subject of tennis; the commented on the match ONLY .... that was professionalism.

they DID NOT run their mouths nonstop, tell gossip about the locker room, insult each other about their respective heights, make barroom comments about the women in the audience, make nasty comments like, "he's looking for his mum to help him tie up his laces," ......... ALL of which unprofessionalism (plus much, much more) i've heard from the Brit/Sudafrikaner team!:(

I like Gilbert and Cahill. They seem to tell it like it is without fear of who likes or dislikes. Of course they can be wrong as with anyone else.

They both have a long history with the game and know a lot of people and also know the pro level of tennis quite well.

I don't mind Gilbert...he might be a little overly animated at times, but he knows his role is to provide a little serious insight in a self-deprecating manner. Unlike Carillo, who tries to dominate every segment she's in, or every match she (unfortunately) commentates.

No, you are not off base. He is annoying. But it's nothing new.
On the other hand, Cahill is becoming more and more like the other espn analysts unfortunately.

A lot of his opponents thought so too. :)

I suspect the real reason the Roddick camp dropped him was because he just wouldn't shut up. The man has verbal diarrhea.
