I have this habit of giving my forehand passing shots too much height over the net. What do some of you successful passers consciously think about when hitting Federer-like forehand passing shots? And I mean the ones from a little behind the baseline, where a little pace is required to make the distance.

do you have a semi-western grip? that might help to get spin similar to Fed's, well, a bit similar ...

stay low, bend your knees dont lift with your knees to generate top spin. more spin rather then power.

Federer like forehand, hey? :)
I sure don't know how, but I found either a fast pace flatter low net clearance or a short heavy topspin dipping shot are very effective passing shots. Especially the later, watch the net player diving to the ground left or right to dig up the ball is a very satisfactory experience.

Ahh, that might be it Zhang, I could be lifting up into the shot which is causing it to go higher than I want it to. Marius yes I do use a SW grip, probably a little closer to Eastern. Mucat, that net skimming flat passing shot you speak of reminded me of Nadal's bh passing shots- so flat! But I guess vs a low ball I'd need the spin. Thanks for the help people!

You don't have to kill a passing shot. Its more about placement. If I don't have a good approach vs my dad, he can pass me almost everytime with his continental forehand. He doesn't hit it 90 mph, but he controls it so well.
