Here's the Grand slam performance for top men and the ATP ranking points they earned. Out of maximum possible 8000.

Incidentally only the top 10 have reached GS semifinals.

1. Roger Federer (RU W W RU) (1200 2000 2000 1200) = 6400
2. Juan Martin Del Potro (Q SF 2R W) (360 720 45 2000) = 3125
3. Rafael Nadal (W 4R - SF) (2000 180 0 720) = 2900
4. Andy Roddick (SF 4R F 3R) (720 180 1200 90) = 2190
5. Robin Soderling (2R F 4R Q) (45 1200 180 360) = 1785
6. Noval Djokovic (QF 3R QF SF) (360 90 360 720) = 1530
7. Andy Murray (4R QF SF 4R) (180 360 720 180) = 1440
7. Fernando Verdasco (SF 4R 4R QF) (720 180 180 360) = 1440
9. Fernando Gonzalez (4R SF 3R QF) ( 180 720 90 360) = 1350
10. Tommy Haas (3R 4R SF 3R) (90 180 720 90) = 1080

Their ATP rankings though differ
Del Potro is No. 5, Roddick is 6 though they have done very good in slams.
Murray is No. 3 but he hasn't done that good in slams.Same for Djokovic.

Robin Soderling is No. 5 in slams but 11 in rankings.

People ought to pay attention to this rather than the standard ATP rankings.

This also means if you do well slams you have a great cushion in points. Federer is 3000 + points over Nadal and DelPo.
And 5000 points over Murray.
