I'm a new middle school coach and would like some advice on dealing with the challenge matches at the MS level. With such a disparity in skill, I'm not sure how to deal with making it fair. I have ten players and was thinking of an A / B skill split and challenges within those and allowing the top scorers in B to challenge up to A. Any thoughts?

make a ladder and have the kids challenge 3 spots ahead... if they win the go up and the loser will go down...

On my team a few years ago, my coach had each player play every player in 4 games and see who won.

yep and then rank the one who wins all of them 1 next 2 so on so on.......

My coach then calculated the percentages of each player and then based the rankings off that.

Put the kids on the A/B team system. If a B player feels like he can beat a player on the A team let him challenge the A player to a match and whoever wins is on the A team.

Heres what it was on my high school team befor our coach retired, every week at practices we would play 2/3 ten point tie breaks. Each tie break you won was a point. At the end of the week the top 7-12 who had the most points would go to the match, if you win your singles match than you automaticly get to go the next week and play singles if you win your doubles than same thing. If you loose than you have to play everyone else again and try and earn your spot back. The way that the coach looked at it was that practice was ment to get you better at point situations and if you wanted to get better you would go to clinics everyone seemed to like that system

We had a rule in HS and college that if you won a ladder match you could keep challenging up. Once you lose, you need to defend your spot before you could challenge up once more.

I hope you don't have 1 of your kid in the program and then you treat your kid to a better ranking than others.. people will surely talk very stuff behind your back... be fair.. and more critical of that..
