Since 1990:
Pete Sampras
Michael Stich
Patrick Rafter
Petr Korda

Before 1990:
Boris Becker
Stefan Edberg
Michael Chang
Mats Wilander

As you can see, several legends fit this category. The last two players to win a US Open w/o having won a Masters event beforehand were Rafter and Sampras -- very good company.

Guga
Hewitt

All of those guys won multiple slams as well.

Hewitt did it as well. He did not win his first masters until 2002.

Korda won a MS before winning the AO.

Gaudio & Krajicek should also be on that list.

So to summarize, these are the players that are the answer to the Op's question(only since 1990, since that is when MS events began)

Sampras
Stich
Krajicek
Kafelnikov
Kuerten
Rafter
Hewitt
Gaudio

3 of these players only won one major.
