Being one of those people who runs and does some pushups and a few machines, this looks pretty intense to me. I have a natural muscle shape to my arms (more than most women) and I hardly do anything. If I worked out for 1-2 hours a day I think I'd look like Serena hehe.

In any case, his footwork is impressive even in this video.

Justine Henin, on Tennis Channel's No Strings, showed her own gym in her apartment with posters of herself posing with all the major trophies. She says when you're in there, you sometimes need some reminders of why you're going through it all, so that you get that bit more motivation.

It works, psychologically speaking.

Anybody know the deal with the abbreviated pushups and pullups??

yeah, i think the trainer mentioned that tennis player's really need to concentrate on their shoulders and their scapulas, seeing how much pressure they put on them. The shortened pull-up, the trainer said, works on his "escapula" (i love spanish!) and the short push-up is a concentrated movement for his shoulders.

Looks pretty slack to me, in all honestly.

Nadal looks like he's 17/18 again with the lack of definition in his physique, especially his arms, forearms .... i'm astonished....

This is mostly all core and stability exercises, Nadal is sure to work a lot more than this.

It is a power plate, a low impact vibration exercise, A lot of women and old people use them to try to reduce cellulite.

I mean videos like this make me love him even more. But I think he needs a better PR person. I feel like seeing him that up close and personal is weird.

"Up close and personal"? Don't you think you are going a bit overboard? I mean the guy is doing a training video not sharing his most intimate thoughts with you:)

Yeah but there are all these close-ups of his legs and it looks like it might be his personal gym. I feel weird knowing all this! Hahahhaa

so much upper back focus

Lol he didn't do any exersize for upper back. Everything was rotator cuff / shoulders / abs / leg. Maybe he slightly hit his upper back on those shrugs on the pull up bar.

Typical tennis player workout.

SI article was saying, Rafa’s training program is a sophisticated enterprise

It must have taken a lot of thought for the trainer to create that routine and it looks so easy when Nadal does it. I wouild have retired after the first minute.

the origin of all rotator cuff muscles is the scapula. are you saying that the scapulae aren't in the upper back?
and he also used the middle traps, lower traps, lats, and rhomboids, which are definitely upper back muscles.

if you have the racquet head speed of a man, and not a little girl, your smaller muscles like the infraspinatus, supraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis - which compose the rotator cuff - in addition to other upper back muscles like the rhomboids will take quite a beating.
this is most likely a video of his accessory exercises to strengthen those muscles and prevent upper body injuries with his crazy forehand.

Just reeling off the names of muscles you picked up on Wikipedia doesn't make you sound knowledgeable.

What a lacklustre workout. I'd be surprised if Nadal ever did this before or again after this video.

very weak workout, no effort at all. Doing that kind of low activity doesn't not do anything except waste time. Muscles benefit after they are stressed, a rubber band isn't enough to stress a muscle enough to make it stronger.

it is one of the routine. nobody is going to give away their secret training routines. even Agassi was interested to know what kind of training Roger does for great footwork.

I hate to say it but the music sounds like something out of a porn video.

I agree it was a bad choice of a song.

It's a dance re-mix of Valerie by Steve Winwood :)

The rubber band exercises aren't to strengthen your muscles, they're to strengthen your tendons, for tennis, your rotator cuff, so you reduce the possibility of developing tendonitis in your shoulder.

Baseball pitchers do those exercises also. That's why pitchers and catchers report to training camp a week earlier than the other players, so they can get their shoulders in shape.

yeah, i think the trainer mentioned that tennis player's really need to concentrate on their shoulders and their scapulas, seeing how much pressure they put on them. The shortened pull-up, the trainer said, works on his "escapula" (i love spanish!) and the short push-up is a concentrated movement for his shoulders.

Are you fluent in Spanish???

Edit: I don't remember hearing anything understandable on the video. Maybe I was listening to something else.

Yeah that 2nd video is like porn with all the shaking the water off his head in the pool. How funny! But in the 2nd video when he does that footwork exercise.... He is incredibly fast.

I think early soccer helps non-us tennis players with their footwork.

If you're too stupid to read, then you're probably too stupid to understand that he's working muscles of the upper back and shoulder.

You've no idea what you're talking about.
Muscle cells don't have one way to respond to everything, in terms of growth and repair. They can increase the number of contractile units, the coordination between motor units in response to an action potential, or the size of the intracellular fluid. Each has a different reason to exist and a different stimulus to respond to.

The exercises with the bungee cords are not for building muscle, they are more like stretches, for the tendons and small muscles as someone else said.

Tennis workouts are not about building muscle and looking good, you need to protect yourself against many different repetitive strain injuries.

I think Nadal's physios and trainers know what they are doing (although he has his knee problems, but then look at the way he plays, might be unavoidable, compared to Federers smoother movement for instance.)
