I heard that basketball shoes can also be used for tennis... can you really use basketball shoes for tennis? What are your thoughts?

Of course you can.. They provide more than enough lateral support for tennis.

Well Bethany Mattek wore Air Jordans 14's. Which actually have a great sole for tennis. So sure.

Yeah, just make sure they aren't indoor soles or they'll get shredded up instantly.

^^^ So true. I wore some Kobe Zoom 4's for one practice session and the front part of the sole got ripped up.

Basketball shoes work just fine. Even many cross trainers do okay as long as their outsole is flat (as opposed to some designed to be more of a do everything running shoe and often come with nubs). The main difference between bball shoes and tennis shoes is that the high end bball shoe outsole will wear much faster than a high end tennis shoe. For cheaper tennis shoes their soles are pretty much made with the same rubber you find on other athletic shoes like bball shoes. Other than the outsole, most tennis shoes, even the highend ones, have what every other sport shoe has. Lunar Lite foam was first used in running shoes. Max Air, Zoom Air, Phylon shank, adiPRENE+, Torsion System, Absorb SBS, etc. are used in almost every single other sport's high end offering by each company. As long as the shoe is designed to offer lateral support as well as forward and backward running support, you should be fine with it for tennis.

it works in reverse, too. if memory serves, john stockton wore air zoom challenges during the 1996/97 NBA season.
