Cara should be working on her serve. That's been her weakness lately. Getting broken all the time these days.

its a plus.

Amazing, extra length makes it even tougher to get the racket head around......she is making a killing in prize money in doubles......get a nice invisible braces. with reflex volleys like that she doesn't have to worry about getting hit in the lips or anything...

Wow, you really gravitate toward the negative.

BTW - Two hands isn't "cheating."

She always seems to have a nice disposition on the court and seeing her practice so hard makes her more attractive as well;-)

Ouch, rough crowd.. :(

Besides, I think this is a cool drill for developing good defensive net play when your opponent blasts a heater at your forehand or backhand hip (typically a more challenging volley to make).

From the matches that I've seen on TV.. not usually. Mostly on fast shots hit into her body, just like the Bryan bothers do. I've seen them also put away hard shots nailed into their bodies using the same double handed (spread grip) defesives volley technique.

For you, the best thing to do is close your eyes and let the ball hit you.

I don't see the point in that. If i do, then i Lose the point. One time i let it go and my partner called it out for me,,,,even though the ball was on the line...... That is the Kind of Partner Everyone must have...............LOL:)

Really cool to see....
I've seen several S/V junior women using one hand go alternate 5 forehands, then 5 backhand volleys on the fly that close to a wall. I say....
WOW. The go easy 45 seconds before a mishit.
Maybe as done, better as a flash show piece than a useful practice, but all hitting is gotta be better than me playing on the internet.
And, how many of YOU say a two handed volley is not possible? She does hold the rackethroat, so only uses two hands on close to body volleys.

When I was a kid a high level doubles player practiced against a back board like that who had a massive serve.
You know how when your a kid some things seem amazing.
That seemed amazing.

Dem balls hit right between your eyes.....
First of all, most flat or slight topspin shots go OUT .....
If the player hits with lots of topspin, then you have time to volley it. That's the beauty of the support hand! Pure one handed volleyer would have to move out of the way with their feet AND body, turn sideways some, which is something that is hard to do fast and controlled.
Don't discount the plus's of the support hand, either on the throat of the racket for shots close to you, or down nearer the handle to hit most volleys you can reach. As in a two handed groundie, you can always let go to reach wide or high shots.

Wow... that is spectacular. I am definately gonna try that... tho from a bit further away, or with a bit less pace! I like the net, but can use a drill like that to try to improve my reflexes.

Jack & Coke
10-01-2009, 05:13 PM
I agree.

I wonder if using a kids sponge ball, or a deflated ball, would help someone new to this drill pick it up faster..

all great doubles players.I doubt that. Even the Brian Brothers use two hands sometimes when they're really rushed.

Speaking of which:

Using 2 hands could become the new technique..... i think more pros should teach this for the doubles skills.

LeeD
10-02-2009, 12:03 PM
I think most teaching pros use what they were taught, and that is basic, simple, easy to learn tennis. So, one handed volley.
They don't seem to embrace too many alternative ideas, like McMillian and Meyer's twohanded volleys..and Connor's early in his career.
But they DO teach volley ready position with the off hand on the throat of the racket, so maybe they DO know what to teach...:)

Has anyone tried this drill?

I just made an attempt against a garage door and was more successful than I thought. It's really a case of getting a feel for the rhythm. Start slow and then work up the speed.

Someone with enough strength could definitely get close to Cara's speed with a single hand, in my opinion.

I tried with a single hand on a wall yesterday. But I've never been great at volleys, so while I could do volleys in succession, I couldn't really alternate sides with each hit like she did. And obviously, I wasn't going near as fast as she was.

This is a doubles practice, the "poor guy" as you call him is just there to stay at the net where the net player should be. The exercise being cross court backhand, he does not have to try to intercept. You can see Cara is aiming at the tennis balls can at the top on the right.
Plus that "poor guy" is Cara's husband and fitness coach (also fitness coach of Leander Paes), former Aussie rules player Brett Stephens.

You use two hands on the drill to keep your wrist from falling off (you're not meant to volley that much!).
