Who do you think it is? Federer or Davydenko or Nalbandian? or someone else?

If by best you mean cleanest, it has to be Murray IMO.

Actually Soderling can be inconsistent at times from the baseline. His 1st set vs Djokovic in China was downright atrocious. I definitely wouldn't put him in this discussion. All the guys hit cleanly, or else they wouldn't be pros. But I wouldn't say Sod is one of the cleanest hitters, when on yes, but when he's off it can be ugly.

Definatley not. Murray hits very cleanly off his backhand, but his forehand a big no! His forehand is sometimes a really bad impression of the Nadal forehand.

On a bad day his FH is a weakness yes, but when on he is effective from both sides. His strokes do seem very clean and effective though.

Murray's forehand is just awful. Look how bad he uses it versus Nadal.

To the answer to thread, Djokovic imo. He has the best balance of flatness and spin off both wings imo.

So what you are saying is that Fed can shank the ball 78 times and still win? GOAT indeed

Davydenko no contest. Federer is not the best ballstriker around. The best ballstriker always hit the sweet spot. Federer is practically the opposite of that.

PS: Agassi is the best example of a good ball striker.

there is so much bias against topspin players and favoritism for flat strikers...its quite silly. people are trapped in time and dont realize that tennis changes.

federer took agassi's hardest flat forehands and even some of his trademark bhs and threw them back with speed AND spin. Andre didnt know what hit him.

his serve was big enough this week. don't underestimate him. he may not hit the spots perfectly, but anyone under 5' 10" and serves 130 is ok by me.

Hah way to go and be the first one in the thread to get defensive. Obviously he keeps winning he's freaking amazing. Definitely not the cleanest forehand though shanks more than anyone else I see on TV.

Has to be delpo doesn't it? He rifles the ball. Him or Davy I would think.

uh, no. federer isn't among the cleanest ball strikers in the game. since you also think federer has the best serve in the game, is there any aspect of tennis that you don't believe federer is the best at?

davydenko, djokovic, stepanek, berdych, and del potro hit the cleanest ball.

Stepanek? Stepanek's FH is downright ugly, and he slices most of his BH as approaches. I do not think of 'clean ball striking' when I think of Stepanek's game. He's really a terrible baseliner for a top 20 player.

as far as clean ballstriking is concerned,

davy, baghdatis,djokovic,nalbandian,safin , del potro

funny to see only one person ( breaker ) mentioning baghdatis till now, he's a cleaner ballstriker than almost everyone except arguably davydenko ...

stepanek hits both sides very clean. his forehand is too flat but he nearly always makes solid contact. he hits a lot of slice backhands but has one of the best/cleanest two handed backhands in the game.

There's no need to repeat the same players already mentioned, because it wouldn't add anything to the thread.

So in addition of the already mentioned players, I'd like to mention Tursunov. Hrbaty's strokes were incredibly clean, but he's retired now, so no.

Just because they are "overrated" doesn't mean that they aren't two of the best ballstrikers on the tour. I think they base most of their game around that fact.

When people refer to them as "overrated", a lot of them are measuring them by their results, and equate that to being everything they can do. But if you do that you really aren't accounting for what they hold back. Which only they know, and we can only hypothesizes on. So to say that they are "overrated", I think, is oversimplifying the analysis of what they are, what they can do, in light of what they have done.

Prove me wrong, if I am. (a challenge)

Nalbandian is one of the best ballstrikers. When he is play his best like in 2007 Madrid and Paris, I felt he just downright embarassed Federer and made him look ordinary. How rare is that? He is also able to produce the best availible shot given the least amount of time.

I agree Federer is top 5 in ballstriking ability, but i wouldnt say he is the best. I mean definitely better than Solderling, Baghdatis and all that craziness people are coming up with. Off the top of my head, there is Nalbandian's variety and control, Verdasco is sick, Gonzales is considerable, mostly based on that forehand.

Davydenko has great ground stokes, but average net game and he has limited ways on how he plays and finishes points.
