honestly I think nadal isn't as good a clay courter now as he was when he was younger and not just because he lost at RG. And even before the injury. If just seems like in the past year he's been a bit more vulnerable on clay. Despite his great record at MS clay

I think it's because he tried so hard to adapt and change his game for more success on the hardcourts it took away from his dominance on clay.

IMO 2008 was he's best year, followed by 2006, 2007, 2005 and 2009.

Nothing can approach the level in 2008 FO,was just plain scary, best claycourt display I've ever seen.

2008 was his best clay court tennis ever. 2009 he was probably playing better than 2005 even with his injuries as 2005 he was still a young pup even though already incredible (especialy on clay) but the competition was just alot tougher this year than 2005 also. Basically a pretty silly thread.

If you go purely on results the only argument to be made for your theory is his loss at the French, as everything else is very close:

2005: RG + 2 clay masters + 5 other
2006: RG + 2 clay masters + 1 other
2007: RG + 2 clay masters + 2 other
2008: RG + 2 clay masters + 1 other
2009: 2 clay masters + 1 other

I don't understand you lumping 2008 in with 2009 though, because he was awesome in '08. 2005 looks better than it really was because he was playing lots of smaller clay court tournaments.

2008 was Nadal at his best ever on clay. If Nadal in 2008 was worse on clay than someone like Federer must have been 3 times worse to have his *** handed to him that badly at the French when he took Nadal to tough 4 setters atleast in every best of 5 they played on clay from 2005-2007.

The reason why he lost this year b/c the playing field was better....Fed, DP and Soderling was good enough to beat him. Plus, the clay surface was different and it definitely didn't favor nadal. I think if you put the Nadal of 2005-07 playing this year clay surface, he could easily lose to the 3 players I've mentioned above. Except 2008, Nadal was still hold his ground.

2006 was a tad better, IMO. He beat a vintage Federer, who was having his best year of all time at Rome and RG...

Yes, 2008 was excellent, but Federer wasn't at his peak like in 2006.

DP didn't beat Nadal on clay.

I'm basing on his performance in Paris. His strokes was just as devastating and powerful as Soderling on both wings.

I think more devastating.

I also believe that there were some aberrations with how the clay played. It seemed to favor flatter strokes possibly due to dryer conditions.

2008 was best from him on clay, not because he demolished Fed @FO final, it was just generally invincible.

Exactly. Incredible level of play in every match at RG.

Nadal is always an excellent clay courter, even this year he was very dominant on clay. I would say his 2008 clay form was the best, he was just making everyone look like complete jokes on the court, and never lost a set in the FO. Sure, he had some close matches before the FO in Hamburg, Monte Carlo, but in the FO he was just unstoppable. One of the best performences ever by any player.

Federer was crap in that match, but IMO even if he was 100% Nadal would still win in straight sets (maybe tighter sets though). He was in god mode in that match.

Yeap. It would be something like 6-4 6-3 6-4 for Nadal even if Fed was actually playing in that match.

I would put my money on Nadal of 2005-2007 to beat the Nadal of 2008.

That's a good way of putting it. Rg 08 was an absolute massacre but beside that single performance. 05-07 nadal seemed more imvincible

My prediction canít be proven since it never happened. But atleast itís facts and/or arguable:
-Clay surface this year was faster
-Fed, DP and Soderling combined are better than any trios in the past; plus, faster surface enhanced their game(not for Nadal)
-Nadal was at his best on clay in 2008

However, one thing is for certainÖ

Andy Roddick - 4 Slams

??????

lleyton Hewitt - 6 Slams

??????

Marat Safin - 4 Slams

??????

David NAlbandian 3 Slams

??????

Richard Gasquet - 5 Slams

??????

I dont think he'll[Federer] win the french.

I think every single year has been the best for Nadal, in 2009 he just happend to get caught by chance.

IMO injuries has nothing to do with anything at all, if Nadal had beat Soderling it would have been just another year for Nadal.
