Baseline - Evert S&V - Navratilova All-court - Hingis

Ferrero is an aggressive baseliner not a counter-puncher. While Ferrero can play some great defense and do some good counter-punching, he is the one who is more likely to dictate his opponents with his big ground strokes and hit many winners.

Baseline - Evert S&V - Navratilova All-court - Hingis

I never saw Evert and Navratilova in their prime but I have watched Hingis and can see your reasons for picking her. Sadly most can't and if they do respond they're pick some guy I won't even mention.

Serve/Volley - John McEnroe '84
Allcourt - Jimmy Connors '74
Baseline - Borg any year he played

S&V: I can't say Edberg is a great S&V b/c he didn't have the "S", only the "V". Mac is also disqualified b/c he has no true form, only adaptation to the moment, and thus his reaction to it. My vote goes to Kramer and Sampras (though even he lacked a small, small amt of "V").
Base: Borg
Allcourt of Alltime: ? I don't know enough about Conners to make a call on this one.
Counter-puncher: The older Agassi; the one that might end up on a postal stamp. Would vote for Hewitt if he keeps it up a few more years.
Off court: Mac, sadly. Who else has been able to profit this much after retiring? Second, Ashe.

S&V - Sampras
All-court - Sampras
Baseline - Agassi

All court: Rios

S&V: Sampras
All-court: Federer
Baseliner: Ferrero
Counter-puncher: Nalbandian

That's like my assesment, since I don't know the players of old. Plus I'm a little biased. Also, we have to have that argument bout whether Sampras is true S&V or just all-court again....

S&V: Edberg, he never let up, he just kept s&v
all courter: Federer
baseliner: agassi
counter puncher: Hewitt, Rainer Schuettler

02-24-2004, 01:02 AM
S&V: Edberg
All-court: Sampras
Power-Baseline: Courier/Agassi
Counter-puncher: Borg and the often grossly understimated Wilander

02-24-2004, 02:43 AM
Serve-Volleyer: Patrick Rafter, John McEnroe

All-Court: Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, The New Kid in Town Joachim Johansson!!!!

Baseliner: In-Form Gustavo Kuerten, Andre Agassi, Marat Safin, Carlos Moya

They can't. At least Roddick can't. I haven't gotten to see JJ play yet.

Roddick will never be all-courter to me, Joachim ain't much better though.

bc-05, like moya, kuerten and Nalbandian in there though, nice pics.

I have to add Aranxa Sanchez-Vicario to the counter punchers list.

Huh? Wow, that is about the craziest thing I have ever read. For starters, Edberg was a true S&V player - he had plenty of S, but he used it to set up the V. Sampras, on the other hand, was so dominating on serve that he didn't really need a V most of the time.

The Mac comment is just bizarre. Yes, the serve was unorthodox, but his volleys (esp. the forehand side) were rock solid & beautifully simple. He fell in love with the cute stuff later in his career, but dig out a circa 82-84 tape sometime - the guy could flat out stick the ball in the corners.
