Strange these two met in the first round.... also strange that Muster didn't even attempt to go for the lob.

Didn't look up what the rankings were then, but the early rounds of tournaments were much more interesting when they only had 16 seeds.

Thomas was very frustrated to go out in the first round of the US Open against Henman after all the hardcourt success he had been having that year (1997). Henman played a great match on the day.

it was a joke from muster... but henman said, in his interview (if i remember well) that he really got scared when muster ran after him !!! :rolleyes:

Didn't look up what the rankings were then, but the early rounds of tournaments were much more interesting when they only had 16 seeds.

At the time, Muster was world number 5 and Henman was world number 21. Muster was the number 5 seed and Henman was unseeded. After winning the Miami Masters earlier that year, Muster was a solid world number 2 and looked likely to regain number 1 from Sampras, but Muster had such a poor clay-court season that year that his ranking dipped.

Henman won their US Open first round encounter 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
