View Full Version : Why is Sharapova getting all the high profile endorsements ?

I think the rest of the girls deserve more, but Gruntie is getting all.

- Is it because of her body ?

- Is it because she raised in US ?

- Is it because of her porn star like grunt ?

- Is it because of her ranking ?

- Is it because she is blonde ?

- Is it because of her father ?

- Is it because ...... ???

- Maybe its me !!

Because shes a teenager, and won a grand slam. Probably the best player on the WTA at the moment and shes good looking. That enough for you??

she is the best looking girl in WTA ... mainly you need good looking girl/guy to help in promoting and selling a company product.

You're right Mchong, she is good at tennis. However, Alex and AndyHewitt are right. The hype and frenzy started WAY before she won a slam(which Anna K proved you don't even have to) and if she looked like....say Sanchez Vicario(sorry Sanchez family) it wouldn't be like this. I don't like it but that's the way our world works.

Ask Martina Navratilova, why Sharapova is a hotter endorsement ticket than she ever was. Then tell her, it's because Sharapove is SUCH a good player. ;-)

She's got IMG taking the gravy train and running with it. I cannot even imagine what Honda is paying her for the Japanese commercials she's appeared in. I CAN tell you, culturally, why she's so popular in Japan.

For some reason, the public (and the media) here LOVE blond western women-they are enamored of them to no end. Additionally, they like people who are freakishly big, whether it's sumo wrestlers (the top ones, and the better ex-stars get tons of endorsements and TV guest spots), or overly big male atheletes like Randy Johnson and Bob Sapp (a K-1 fighter here-6"7, 370 lbs, all muscle)-both have done many, many ads and guest appearances on Japanese TV.

Maria, compared to western women, is "tall". Compared to Japanese women (and most men), she's downright freakish. So, blonde/blue eyed female AND freakish is pretty much an unbeatable combination in a country where all of those characteristics are admired or, at the very least, looked upon as interesting curiosities.

The reason for this is part infeiority complex and part curiosity with anything "big", but this is not the place to go Freudian. Bottom line, the money that Honda pays her ALONE is enough to set most people up for life.

Still like that there eh Phil? I remember even in the 70's/80's some not so great tennis blonde bombshells were reportedly making some big bucks over there. Like Andrea Temesvari for example.

It's got its moments, Datacipher. Overall, not such a bad lifestyle, though I wonder why I haven't received any commercial offers yet! Still can't get a friggin' decent slice of pizza, though...

I vaguely remember Andrea-wow, even she got the endorsements here...

personality?! LOL no, these endorsements arent b/c of her personality. they are b/c she is 1) young, tall & blonde with a decent face and 2) has game. emphasis on #1. what personality?? There are better looking players though on tour.

Depends on how you define likeable. The more I see of her, the more I dislike her. The fake grunt, the airheadedness, the constant giggling in interviews... more annoying by the week.

You want a girl that's likeable? Alicia Molik is likeable, from what I've seen on my tube.

I agree that Molik is likeable, very likeable. It seems more and more to me that most Australians are very likeable people. They seem very warm and friendly and any I have met, though I haven't met too many, have been really really nice. I hope Alicia Molik continues to play well and it would be such a kick if she wins a grand slam this year. I would absolutely love that. I would probably even get more emotional than normal to see her joy lifting a grand slam trophy/plate.

I'm a teenager,Sharapova's age,a guy(straight) but still don't find her 'nice'.She has too much attitude,no humbleness and her head is full of air.I thought that loss to davenport might bring her down to Earth, but heck no,ain't happening. She thinks she's royalty.
I totally agree with Craig Sheppard, that guy hit the bull's eye.

What good taste you have tennissavy!
Molik is obviously struggling on clay, but had a really good chance at the Family Circle. Unfortunately had to withdraw due to an inner ear infection. Next appearance at the German Open where she is seeded 7th.

I totally agree with Craig Sheppard, that guy hit the bull's eye. She's humble - consider what she's been thrust into. I'm always amazed how people on this board here about 1 or 2 bad events or statements and draw their conclusions from them. I've heard of about 50 where she's been very nice and accomodating to the fans and press.

How would you do, yvp? Let me guess - you think you'd smile all the time, sign every autograph, pose for every picture, do every interview request... blah, blah, blah. Everyone thinks they'd be like Sampras. Which is funny because while Sampras never did anything to shame the sport (there was that incident with his Porsche on Sunset Blvd...) he didn't exactly wear himself out promoting the sport either.

Phil, I was in Tokyo last June - great city. I didn't try the pizza - wanted to eat like the local - but heard there was a pizzaria in Roppongi that was pretty good. And yes, there was a huge side of a building with Bob Sapp on it - forget who hawking for. Lucy Liu was selling beer on TV commercials - which they also had projecting onto the walls of the subway, while the cars were moving. And Kevin Costner (I think - or some other male actor about his age) was selling whiskey.

so many...

Dulko, MASL (maria antonia sanchez lorenzo), Suarez (those legs, yum), marta domachowska (sp?), hantuchova (now that she's no longer anorexic), Iroda T, jana kandarr, babsi schwartz off the top of my head but there are many more. mashona wash is supposed to be scorching (although ive never seen her)

sharpy is flat as a pancake on both sides - has zero figure. of course, she's better looking than most female tennis players (esp. the successful ones) but she's really not that hot.

By 'good looking' it's mostly about the face. If you don't think MS's face is beautiful, you need to find a new optometrist. The 'curves' get in the way. You kids probably don't remember Rosie Casals - best known for being BJ King's doubles partner - she once said to a male reporter: "try playing tennis with two apples attached to your chest."

Sharapova is gorgeous and an amazing tennis player and she is still in her freaking teens! When the hell has that ever happened before?

oumpapa
04-21-2005, 05:12 AM
Sharapova is the first female pro ever that would have had a remote chance of making it big time as a fashion model. She looks great off court and in fashion shoots - much, much better than Kournikova or any other of the beautiful tennis girls of late. Kournikova looked great on court though.
Talking about Anna - it's so strange to me that people so quickly forgot what a great talent she was. I'm sure that if she had won a tournament early on in her career she would have been a force on the WTA.

Marketers understand human nature. They should, they been at it for a long time. If you want to hold someones attention for a second or more you need something eye catching. If we lived is a socialistic country then it wouldnt matter who you marketed, hee hee.

FREE_MARTHA,

Enlighten me, why living in SF has something to do with understanding sharapova's endorsements deals. I was thinking other European / Russian / maybe some Asian girls should get part of her deals.

By the way, what do you mean by a "shallow community." Its not that I have full of love for San Francisco. I am asking due to curiosity.

Who, people who can barely speak English?

Maybe in their countries...

Oh, I forgot, a command of English is the pre-requisite to getting endorsements.

Even so, there are only a handful in the WTA top 50 who cannot speak English well (yes, I mean well, meaning, you understood what were said, and she understood what you said, that includes your stupid slangs)

From what Andy_Hewitt wrote, I derived that those who know English, plus definite proficiency in other languages should be damned.

Andy_Hewitt, what language besides English do you speak ?

Its afterall, not about language, is it ???

Hmmm lets see...
Good looking woman who TALKS LIKE AN AMERICAN in a commercial talking
vs
Good looking woman with DEEP ACCENT in a commercial talking

Which would u rather have?

MsPiggy

Sharapova talks like she's singing, sometimes I feel she is only faking the American accent and trying to Americanize herself too much. She is after all a Russian representing Russia not United States.

By the way, what's wrong with good looking women with accent talking in a commercial? Isn't having accent sexy?? Take Penelope Cruz for example. Most can barely understand what she is saying in English but she is hot as hell.
