So my coach has one of Agassi's actual frames that he used to win the 1999 USO. I was looking at it yesterday and noticed that the Kevlar mains do not go all the way to the last main. The Nat. gut crosses also are used to string the last main on each side. Any idea on what this would accomplish? Benefits etc.?

My guess would be greater comfort and forgiveness on misshits.

Thread about agassi and his string pattern.

It was very dense like 20 mains with 21 crosses.

One poster responded:

outside two mains (last one on each side) were gut and the rest of the mains were Kevlar. The crosses were all natural gut. I was informed that the two outside mains were with gut because the 6mts of Kevlar wouldn't reach........

One of the theories behind this was because of the brand or type of kevlar he used only being available in sets rather than reels. In a dense 20x21 pattern, you would not full be able to do 2 racquets with one set. So doing the last 2 mains from the same string as the crosses was a creative way to solve that.

20x21 would burn up a lot of string. Sounds like a 2 piece ATW pattern. :?

Well I'm not sure about other possible versions that he may have played with but I can tell you this one is 18X19 pattern so the length idea doesn't really work. It's an interesting thought though. I will probably give it a try just out of curiosity.

Well it is said that he switched back to 18x19 sometime '99, but if you look up pictures of him from '93-'99, you can clearly see his Radicals were 20x21. One reason I can see why this was done in a 18x19 Radical is perhaps having the last two mains being the softer string does something to enhance the feel since Kevlar feels pretty dead in general. I have thought about using this trick in cases where you're hybriding, but the one set of string you're using for the mains isn't long enough for2 Radical OS racquets.
