Asked and answered (about 3000 times in the last ten years).

Typically, when people are having problems getting their serve to kick, it is because their toss is not over their head enough and still too far to the right (as for flat or slice.) You can also experiment with using an EBH grip to induce more spin.

As Bud suggested above, there is a wealth of information regarding how to hit a kick serve on the internet, complete with instructions, videos, etc. Check those out and it should open your eyes a bit.

If you want to see the extremes, watch videos of Rafter or Edberg, but unless you are very young, you may not want to use their technique as it is very taxing on one's body. They both also have incredible net game and volleying technique; textbook stuff. None better. Becker and Sampras also have great kick/twist serves. Their contact point is slightly to the left of their head. Great kick/twist technique. They make it look so easy. Good luck with that. ;o)

My advise is always the same - people cannot hit top spin/kick because they their shoulders (so the chest faces the net before hitting the ball). If you do this, inevitably, you will brush up the side of the ball, for slice.

If you want to brush up the back of the ball, for topspin, you need to stay sideways prior to contact so that the racquet path on the serve is along the baseline prior to contact.

the server hits and then rotates the shoulders. It helps me to think of hitting outside of the ball on the backhand side.

At first work on spin, and add pace later.

I wonder if that guy can serve bounces that high here in BerkeleyCa, where I play, and the air temps are 52 degrees, at sea level, and we use the heaviest, nappiest DunlopExtraDutyHardCourt balls.
When I go out on hot days to play tennis, like around 70 degrees, I can bounce my twists well up over 6' high almost every time.
Then I go play in my normal mid 50's temps, and the ball barely gets up to chin heights.
I don't wonder how my serve would do in 90degree temps, because I would die of heat exhaustion before I warmed up.

Ive been working on this serve for a while now and Im just now getting to where I can hit it really good. What I do is throw my toss sort of in the same area as my flat serve, then with a slight eastern backhand grip I get a deep back scratch then accelerate the racquet up the back of the ball, then at follow through I concentrate on keeping my hitting arm close to my body, Ive found this really helps me hit up the back of the ball rather than hitting the side of the ball which was why I was having trouble with this serve for a while. The other day I was hitting kickers that bounced up 6' or more, they were pretty sick.
