I'm not a fan of metal by any means and I've seen Dream Theater live. They are hardly unknown, good sound nonetheless.

One of, if not the most popular progressive metal bands ever. Only people who won't know who they are, are those who listen solo to R&B/Rap. Most "rock" listeners at least know of them.

Scenes and I&W are ridiculously good.

My nomination - Down and Above. Local Minneapolis band that writes fantastic music. www.myspace.com/downandabove

Dream Theater is well known band, and totally deserved by the way, it is a great band.

A ver good and not so well known band is VAST.

This is a really good song (IMHO): Last one alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2PDLw0wvIU)

They've become pretty well known since they became crap. A combination of Mike Portnoy listening to Muse too much and signing to Roadrunner did it.

Dream Theater and also Porcupine Tree are great bands.
However in my opinion the best band in the world right now is Riverside from Poland. I saw them live for the second time in late november 2009 and their show was unbelievable -what a musicianship, what an atmosphere, great track followed by even greater track! :)

DT have come a long way since I saw them at a water park with galactic cowboys back in the summer of 92! Glad people have heard of them (with ZERO radio play/MTV)

Others great bands you may not have heard of:

the Shins

Royksopp
Ulcer (local new mexico band back in the day)

The Shins are fantastic. Until the movie 'Garden State' came out, they were very much under the radar. I'm a big fan of Alt Country (or whatever it's called these days) and some of my faves are:

Drive By Truckers
Son Volt
Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams' band before going solo/with The Cardinals)
Bottle Rockets

Also a big fan of Mason Jennings (has toured with Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, G Love but ten times the songwriter those guys are) and My Morning Jacket.

Agents of Good Roots were a fantastic band out of Va in the early to mid 90's. Jazzy, funky, multi-instrumental stuff. Didn't get the play that Dave Matthews did but easily as talented (probably more) and great live.

Agree with the previous poster about Jeff Buckley. Best male rock voice ever, IMHO.

Dokken was the "the talk of school" back then for a while. They were pretty big, but I was very into Van Halen back then. Rock seemed to really die down between the early 1980's until Nirvana came on the scene and then as one musician said it was like a "sickle through wheat". They mowed down all the big hair bands instantly. Yet, I loved this tune:

They are extremely talented aren't they? I saw them open up for U2 in Austin, TX back in the early 1990's. I could not believe how "tight" their playing was. No mistakes if you know what I mean. I posted that because many people don't know much about them at all, though they are a very big "underground/alternative" band aren't they? Thanks, glad you got to see them recently. I think you are right, seems Mr. Black wants to do his own thing. Good for you!
