Strange things happen in tennisland, just saw Yanina Wickmayer with a blacked out racket with Donnay stencil in Auckland, she was under contract with Dunlop and Dunlop is from the same group as Donnay (Sportsdirect) so maybe Donnay is planning to come back on tour.
I will try to find out more...

maybe the success of the Pro One and Pro One OS on Tennis Warehouse made the Donnay people think about coming back. :-)

That's pretty exciting stuff. I'd like to see a Pro One OS with a more modern paintjob, lol, that's why I avoided the TW Pro One OS. The paintjob was a total turnoff.

Dunlop and Donnay are both owned by the same parent company. So Wickmayer now having her Dunlop Aerogel 4D 500 blacked out with a Donnay stencil on the string is a marketing decision by Sport Direct. The owner of Dunlop and Donnay.

Well she played today with blacked out stick with no stencil from what I could see - carrying a Dunlop bag. They are probably just trying to figure out what they want her to push.

So I followed the link to the Sports Direct site and read this under their brands page:

Donnay
Donnay was the first Group Brand acquired by the Group in 1996. The Group owns the worldwide rights to the brand. Donnay is best known for tennis products. With the acquisition of the Dunlop and Slazenger brands, Donnay is likely to be utilised for entry-level tennis apparel and equipment, an area where Donnay has had some success in the past, as well as travel, leisure and fitness (including bags and accessories), golf and footwear.

I think they'll have trouble finding pros to sponsor. I think that's the problem with the Adidas racquets. Sponsorships equals sales.

Well, the thing is they can take damn near any racquet and paint it to look like an Adidas or Donnay and so not affect a players ability. All it takes is the money to contract the player.

I was thinking that all the pros seem to be already sponsored by other companies. There doesn't seem to be any more room in the market for another brand such as Adidas or Donnay.

True, but if Sports Direct wanted to do it bad enough, they could buy out somebody's contract and bring them on board.

All it takes is the will and the money.

Hmmm, strange that Adidas hasn't done this yet. No pro endorsements
= no sales.

I agree 100%. And they have about seven metric tons of cash laying around. I don't know why they haven't done this yet.

So Donnay must be preparing a return into the serious player's frame market...

Strange that someone coming from a Pure Drive plays with Dunlop and now Donnay.

That must mean that Donnay is doing some R & D, because she couldn't be playing with a Pro One, as that frame is dramatically lower powered than the Pure Drive Wickmayer was used to.

Strange thing is that her website is still full of pictures with the Babolat racquet. I guess that if she is moving to Donnay she should do something about that.

I get your point vsbabolat, but what I was trying to say is that Sport Direct must have decided to promote the Donnay brand. If they promote that brand over Dunlop, the other brand they own, there must be a reason for that.

They must be bringing Donnay back on a larger scale. Donnay was basically dead until TW did the limited production run of the Pro Ones. Now, the Pro Ones were a nostalgic throwback to the past.

If Wickmayer is promoting Donnay over Dunlop (off course we know she plays with a paintjob) that must mean that Sports Direct is planning on launching Donnay branded racquets on the player's market. Racquets that will have a different design from the Dunlop line. One could compare it to the Volkl and Becker lines.

That is at least a conclusion I would draw from it. Why would you make one of the better players show up with a blacked out frame with a Donnay stencil on it in the final of a WTA tournament. Donnay was basically synonymous for cheap aluminum frames a short time ago.

We may know that Donnay and Dunlop belong to the same owner, but the larger public does not know that. So I guess Sports Direct has now chosen to promote Donnay via Wickmayer or would they just want to confuse the lay tennis fan by having her play one day with a Dunlop and the other day with a Donnay paintjob?

Yes, agree 100% with this statement. They play with whatever they are under contract to play with OR a pj of one.

Watch out for a resurgence of a once active brand this year. Some very very good people are involved in the r and d side. :)

Top of the message reply box is a little icon of a mountain w/ a sun over it. Click this, a box will pop up, copy/paste the image url into this box, click "ok". You are done. As far as I know the image must be hosted elsewhere, so if its a personal image on your computer you must upload it to a host site first. I'm new so I may be wrong, but I don't think this board runs an image host site.

At lot of images on the web aren't protected and you can simply right click on the image and then left click on "Copy image URL" to get the image url. I am not an attorney nor do I know the copy right laws and am not recommending you do or do not do this. :p

I have just seen this. I am really wondering where Sport Direct is heading by making the Donnay brand visible at GS level. They must have a new Donnay racquet line in store... I am curious with what they will come up.

Was really cool to see Wickmayer playing with a Donnay(pj) - I hope the new Donnays are gonna be up to the old Belgium Donnay standard! I have 3 original Donnays and they are great.

That's not correct. Dunlop is a fragmented company. The people who own Dunlop UK might own Donnay but Dunlop Australia is owned by a different group again and I think there are at least two other 'Dunlop' groups.

IMO - no chance. If we're lucky then the frame(s) hitting the stores (if they actually do) are more likely to be Dunlops painted as Donnays. Considering the parent company also owns the Slazenger brand, you've only got to see what they did with Slaz. So don't expect too much.

I find it very hard to believe that what Wickmayer is hitting with, actually is a Dunlop 500. I cannot see any tapered beam (both the yellow en black/white racket seem straight beam to me) and the racket doesn't look like a 100" racket, looks more like a 98" racket to me... :-|

Surely you can't tell the difference between a 100 sq.inch and a 98 sq.inch racquet by just looking at a picture?

I think I can.. This racket just doesn't seem 100" inch to me, plus 100" rackets tend to have a different shape.. but also, I don't see a tapered beam on this racket.

DavidGarcia
01-24-2010, 11:28 AM
I dont think that is a Dunlop AG 500 but it is not either a Babolat Pure Drive.

Looking at that picture that racket could be perfectly a 100".

01-24-2010, 11:36 AM
The Beam Width appears to be a straight beam in the posted pics, as well as thinner than the Aerogel 500.....but it very well could be the 500 with a paintjob

Can anybody please tell me if TW will still sell the Pro One MP or, since this was a joint venture with Dunlop, we'll never see the racquets again? I'm down to my last 2 racquets and am afraid I won't be able to find a replacement. The Dunlop 200 4D Tour seems like the closest thing, but too heavy a swingweight.

DrumWizOHBD

Word is out that they will be no more new Donnay Pro One MP's produced for TW. Sorry!. But, since Wickmayer appeared in the Australian Open with a Paintjob and Donnay Stencil.....perhaps Donnay is planning a comeback, and hopefully they will bring some sweet player's sticks with them!
