EDIT: Sorry, going to resize pics and re-upload. Bear with me (also forgive the grammatical fail in the title, I added 'ex-Kuerten' post-facto, tut tut.)
EDIT: Done :-)

Swapped a Speed MP 16x19 today for a Head PT167A with one of the assistant coaches at my club. Apparently Kuerten's brother came to the club a while ago and gave this racquet to one of the coaches saying it was one of Guga's (the implication being that Guga played with it, however I'm not sure that's what he meant, could just be one he owned or was given by Head.)

It's in pretty beaten up condition but plays really nicely (imo.) Well balanced and flexible (really comfy even with old poly in it.) There appears to be a crack in the throat but I can't tell how bad or serious it is (didn't notice it when I played with it earlier.)

I only paid 50 for the Speed MP that I swapped it for and much prefer this PT frame to play with so I'm happy with the swap (unless it snaps soon or something.)

Was wondering

A: Is this really an FXP Radical? (it has the FXP cut outs in the hoop) If so why does it have a PT code and no other info on the throat?
B: What are the specs? (roughly)
C: Did Guga ever use a frame like this?
D: Is the crack going to be a big problem? (I couldn't get a very good photo of it though, only got my phone to use.)

Thanks a lot in advice for any information =)

Pics..(resized now, ahh.)

General shot of the frame (note Victorian fireplace in the background, nice, natch)

Code in throat (this is the only text, no specs or anything else)

Crack (I think it's a crack anyway, it seems shallow and runs vertically and there is a horizontal line on the front and back of the throat, don't notice any rattles or anything though.)

Nice racquet!

It looks like a PT167A to me:)

Thanks jimbo, but what is a PT167A exactly??? (I don't mean in some deep ontological sense, more like history/stats, etc)

Just been comparing pics of FXP Radical MP and my PT167A, I could be wrong but the head shapes don't look the same to me. The PT looks more oval like an FXP Prestige MP.

Hmm.

Are there actual flexpoint holes at 3 & 9 right inside the "eyes"? Or just a paint job?

Yes, flexpoint holes and ridges at 10/2 and 7/5 o'clock.

As asked for in the Head codes thread here are my current guesses as to the specs of this frame...

Headsize: I'd say a 98. Same oval headshape and size as my FXP Prestige MP (I held the one over the other and they look very similar)
Length: 27 inches.
Balance: 310mm (not sure how many points that makes it, feels good to me anyway, I haven't taken the grip off yet so not sure how much stuff there is under the current Yonex overgrip.)
Weight: Hard to tell without a scale but comparing to other racquets I've got I would say it's in the 335 to 350 range (feels quite light to use as most of the weight is toward the handle but holding in by the throat it feels a bit heavier than the FXP Prestige MP)
Flex: More flexible than the FXP Prestige MP, similar to my Yonex RQiS 1 Tour so I would guess it's low 60s, lowest of high 50s (just a guess though.)
Pattern: 18/20
Beam Width: About 21mm
Grip Size/Frame Features: 4 1/2 (my size, nice), frame has the flexpoint features and the ridges on the hoop that the retail Radical FXP had (not sure if they have a proper name etc)
Pallet: TK 76

Added note about the pallet in the spec list (just taken the grip off, intend to put a white or black hydrosorb on it tomorrow.)

if you come so far as removing the grip, pop open the pallet with a knife and see what it says on the hairpin....

How easy is that to do?

The buttcap is stapled on and there is clear tape over the pallet but I can see it's in two halves.

What useful info might be found inside? (don't know what the hairpin is)

I'd say it is a Pro Stock of the FXP Radical MP. I believe he only tried them. In tournament play Guga did not use PT167A frame. During the Flexpoint time period he used a racquet with the Pro Tour 630 layup and mold, with Flexpoints in the mold with Flexpoint Prestige Cosmetics.

Nope, Dennis he signed to Wilson this year, and his using an nBlade now. Patty Schnyder just went over to a FXP Radical. Guga tried them Giorgio Galimberti plays them. Michael Tabara was playing the Radical Tour as was Hyung Taik Lee(went back to the Prestige 660), along with Elena Bovina.

Head did frames with the FXP holes, but they didn't have flex points there. Sela, Guga, and Wawrinka had or have frames like these. Guga had both a Radical and Prestige with the FXP holes, but they didn't flex there and both had Pro Tour lay ups. Wawrinka, he has the Pro Tour lay up as well if I remember what I had been told

Thanks a lot. That all makes sense. It must have been a racquet he tried out which his brother gave away for some reason (he was doing some coaching at my club apparently, before I was a member a few years ago I think.)

Did any pro use the PT167A?

I remember Rainer Schuettler and Florian Mayer trying them out for a short time on tour. But they both switched back to their former racquets at that time. Schuettler went back to the PT10 and Mayer went back to the PT57E.

Thanks again. Seems a bit of an obscure frame then. I like it anyway, very comfortable and 'whippy' for a heavy racquet.

Sorry for being ignorant and for bugging you but what is the 'layup' and how does it differ from the mould?

Xenakis

Put a new hydrosorb on it and a tournagrip over the top for that 'classic' orange/blue look. Just needs cleaning under the strings and restringing now (will try Head rip control at about 53lbs, however the dead poly in it plays amazingly well for an old fraying string.)

Also, I think the crack might just be a scratch at the bottom of the throat. The two horizontal lines either side seem to be unconnected to the scratch/crack and seem part of the mould (possibly, a bit rough looking though.)

I have the prostock prestige 600 classic that has the flexpoints. Great stick. I think it's what acasuso used.

Interesting, someone is selling a PT167A on the bay. Here is the descriptive text...

One used Head Flexpoint Radical PT167A Pro stock hand tune by Bosworth. The grip is reshape like Wilson grip by Bosworth with nice balance. This is a player racket 348g unstrung. Super Super stable with great feel, power and spin. This racket belong to a former ATP Tour Pro that used it briefly. This PT167A mold is Head Pro Tour 630 mold with Flexpoint holes. Totally difference mold than a retail Radical FXP.

Item no..320475473196 (you can buy it now for $199 apparently)

I've just bought some CAP grommets from the FXP Prestige MP to fit on the PT167A assuming it would be the same as the FXP Radical. Hopefully they'll fit, we'll see.

PT167A is not the same mold as the Pro Tour 630 with Flexpoint.

The bay seller is wrong then, tut tut. I'd quite like another one of these frames but I'm not paying $199 for one.

Where'd you get the first one?

That e-bay seller with the PT167 is not very knowledgeable about sticks. He once found out from me, that the two Babolats he have are first generation Pure Drives (which i figured from the grommets). He found this out from me, confirmed it with the previous owner (Jeff Tarango), he changed the description of his listing, and as soon thereinafter within 15 mins of changing description sold them for $150 more than what he originally was asking. Later on he thanked me with a message lol. And the info about PD grommets was something I learned from Ericsson here on the boards.

Members such as Vsbabolat, Retrowagen, Ericcsson, Racquetfreak...these are the names that reached the racquet nirvana LOL :)

See the first post.

Just put CAP grommets on this earlier and will restring it with Rip Control tonight (my second ever string job, hope it goes ok.)

Here she is, CAP'd and freshly strung (my second string job, made quite a few mistakes and had to do the crosses twice, meh, good in the end though.)

Hey Xenakis,
how did you get rid of the rattle in this racket? I'm experiencing the same thing with my TGK, with the silicone in the way and all... Thanks

Xenakis

Yeah rattle is gone. I took the grommets out and the bits came out easily.

ManuGinobili

Could you just remove the CAP grommets and put it back in? Or did you have to get a new one.
