What gear were todays pros using when they were 13,14,15?
Were they using customized racquets? Were they with gut already?

Just a few off the top of my head....

Johnny Mac - Dunlop, then Wilson, then Dunlop, then Volkl, Then Dunlop again.

Martina Hingis - Volkl, then Yonex

Lendl - Slazenger Challange No. 1 as a junior, before his famous Kneissl / adidas / mizuno

Edberg - Wilson in juniors when I saw him

Borg - Slazenger Challenge No. 1

Roddick - Prince

Roger - Wilson

Pete had a wooden Wilson Kramer, then a Kneissl and a Donnay, iirc...before the WIlson Pro Staff

Oh, well, sorry, I don't know much. I do know Pete had gut in 16s. That was kind of a revered thing.

I know Courier used some thick nylon. Not sure about Chang and Andre.

Leoina 66 was popular back then, so that's a safe bet, I suppose.

What actual racquets did McEnroe use then, am especially interested in which Volkl?

Certainly wasn't aware of this:shock:

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean he had a Volkl as a kid. He had a Maxply in juniors, then a Wilson Kramer, then a Wilson Pro Staff Kramer in college and as a young pro. Then a Maxply. Then a Maxply McEnroe, then a 200g, then a snauwaert, a yonex, a head prestige, and back to the 200g for a good while.
Then his Volkl, in 1997 as an old dude on the dinosaur tour was the c 10 pro.

Now he's back to Dunlop.

Re the thread title.

Should be...

Pros' gear when they were growing up.

Not

Pro's gear when they were growing up.

Pros' (plural, more than one pro)
Pro's (singular, one pro)

Just saying, don't shoot the messenger.

I don't know how you get away with this:)

I spent the first 3 months on here doing the same thing, correcting grammar, and was getting murdered for it and gave up!

Lol. The job probably has a high turnover/burnout rate. I'll be in the hotseat for now.

Yonex R-22 at the 1992 World Team Cup and French Open.

As far as I know McEnroe only had a Snauwaert stencil on his Max200G and did not actually use a real Snauwaert racquet. During his brief contract with Snauwaert.

Thanks, as usual great info:)

Now that I think about it, I also remember in another thread McEnroe used a Prince Lightning 90 at a tournament at around the same time, he was clearly experimenting post Max200G!

Nadal used the Pure Drive through his junior years until 2005ish.

I know he hasn't changed his grip size since he was 11!

Still using Duralast back then??

I know Agassi used to use Prince and Donnay, I wonder which one he used as a child. I know he did use wood at times when he was little.

I can't provide the specificity requested in the OP–in fact, I can't even remember enough names to solidly support the following–but I do remember a trend that struck me in the 80's. It seemed like a lot of top juniors and young pros would come up through the ranks playing Prince oversize frames (usually the POG) and then switch.

Yonex, especially, seemed to get a lot of former Prince players under contract, and of course the Prince reps I knew spoke of Yonex "buying a reputation" rather than developing players.

Agassi grew up playing with POG OS in bolletieri academy.

Lendl - Slazenger Challange No. 1 as a junior,

Edberg - Wilson in juniors when I saw him

I don't know about the Slazenger but Lendl used a Dunlop Maxply when he was 17/18.

Stefan Edberg used an aluminium Rossignol before Wilson.

Pat Cash - Slazenger, Stellar, Prince, Yonex (after retiring from pro tour - Head, Major, Volkl, Dunlop).

Wilander - Rossignol, Prince, Fischer (after retiring - Volkl, Yonex)
