Are the lobsters, or any of the other ball machines, able to toss a realistic defensive/offensive lob?

Yes, especially the ones that have a topspin/backspin feature.

actually, the lobster is designed from the get go to give amazing 45-55 degree lobs...that's why it's called "the lob..ster.
Other machines have not traditionally handled lobs well...

When I was doing my research in preparation to buy a ball machine, I seem to recall that most of the machines claimed they could hoist up lobs at around 50º. I know the Playmate does, and I'm here to tell ya, it's not a realistic lob. What I do is tilt the machine back and place a cone (turned on it's side) underneath the wheels, lock the casters, and poof - realistic lobs, the kind of lobs you'll actually see in a match. The Playmate directional system is internal, hence the machine stays motionless when feeding balls to the left or right, so tipping it back and setting it up to sweep lobs to the left and right isn't a problem.
