coachrick: LeoinaUFO came in a hot pink before pink was cool . In its time, Toalson was a pretty good string, a joy to install compared to the heavy Leoina 66. Stuff would saw itself in half back in the days of multiple shared string holes. I don't recall stringing any 'graphite' UFO...used plenty of black and hot pink in the Prince Pros back then.

TOA got a lot of miles from that sketch of John Newcombe on the package.

Remember when sets went from 33' to 36' ? Gosen was the first to offer 40' sets as standard back in '83 or so. Is your set 10m?

Nice post...it would be interesting to see some of the old packaging from the good old days!

dataseviltwin: thaaat's a blast from the past...

vwfye: man... i went through reals of 66 on the college team in was on. UFO was too expensive!

A string I liked a lot in the 1970s was Leoina Horn, had a very fine wire twisted in with the synthetic gut. Felt really good to hit with.

I remember a few of these strings... the Leoina UFO and the Horn with the thin metal wire in the string. I also remember the Supreme Gut with the Kangaroo and Imperial Gut.

Other than that I can only remember off the top of my head... Hy-O-sheep an oil filled string and Hy-sheep without the oil... of course Leoina 66, Leoina 77 and Leonia Graphite. Of course there was Super Blue... the cheapest nylon you could buy.

Other than that... I was using string by a local distributor called Black Knight.

Oh and of course the first mulitfibre Blue Star.

Leoina 66 (15L) is still my all-time favourite string.

Retrowagen, any experience with the strings posted so far in the thread? Also, at what tension and in what racquets did you use the 66?

No, Dino, sorry but I haven't any experience with any of the other strings you have shown, although the packaging certainly is interesting to see (I like the English text on the Japanese strings, it's fun to read, and I'm not sure how popular the Babolat Maillot would have been in the English-speaking world with a proud "BM" emblem on the front).

Leoina 66 was a favourite in my Head Graphite Vector (circa 1983) @ 60 lbs.. Then from 1984-1987 in my Kneissl White Star Pro Masters, Masters 10's, and Adidas Lendl GTX Pros at 62-65 lbs (which would collapse the Kneissl frames after a couple months; the central mains would pull through at the top of the hoop). Then later in 1987 in my Max 200g's @ 60 lbs., then in 1988-1991 in my Head Elite Pros @ 60 lbs, then in 1992 in my Fischer Vacuum Elliptics @ 60 lbs. Then I took 13 years off and had no racquets strung.

Nowadays, I use Wilson NXT 16ga. @ 57 lbs. in my Elite Pros, it keeps its tension better and lasts quite a bit longer than the Leoina 66. However, the Leoina is much cheaper, and a really underrated string that I think works well for a player whose game is built around hitting mostly flat.

I am told by some that it also works well in lawn trimmers. But I can't say.

retro, that's the string I have in one of my Chris frames - absolutely love it, it's so soft. One of my other Chris's has the original Chris Pro Synthetic string (the stencil is still as clear as the day it was put on) and my stringer says it's also the Leoina 66, just under the Chris name.

.

Thankfully, they added the third gut division--WITT--and ended up with BMW for initials :) . My tool kit case has the BMW logo on it. It was my understanding that one division produced strings for musical instruments, one produced surgical sutures and the third produced racket strings. Have to say that BMW cars weren't popular enough to be on the radar for folks who might confuse the two companies(BMW motorcycles are another story). We just referred to the strings by model name...VS, AFV, Africord, et al.

Anyone remember the Declasse strings from BMW? Pretty good stuff sometimes; other times, not so much.

How about Vilalta Vich or VV strings...used by Nastase for a time...beautiful stuff!

I remember getting a 'deal' on some American Eagle gut that had been 'lost' in the warehouse for years...that was some THICK stuff...way hard to string!

How about PDP Rough Gut...green spiral...used by Roscoe Tanner at one point...nasty, barbed-wire looking rope that would 'unspiral' in a flash if you weren't very careful.

These 'kids' on TW don't know the heartache of having 4-6-8 shared holes in a wood or sandwich composite frame and having to install 15ga natural gut(uncoated)!! :) Of course, we had to walk 10 miles uphill in the snow(barefoot!) to get to the tennis shop, also! :)

Wow I think I had those strings on my PDP Open once. Thanks for bringing a nice memory!

That was my string of choice back in the day. I remember it as being great stuff, but who knows now.

PDP Rough Gut might make an interesting main-string for a hybrid...would be a lot easier to install nowadays with fewer/no shared holes in most sticks.

The best Pacific String I have ever used. I like the amber color. It would be nice if Pacific would have amber gut strings again.

Don't Let It Bounce
02-25-2010, 02:20 PM
In 1985 my Magnesium Pros would accept no substitute for Leoina UFO pink. The kids at the camp where i was teaching called it "bubble gum string".

The next summer I had gotten a great deal on some cheap gut that MAY have been American Eagle. It was black, and I know it had been around since standard-size racquets because there was so damned little of it. (I had to pull the last string in a Spectrum Comp OS by hand.) It was either uncoated or badly coated, and the kids and the other coaches called that one "Smellygut". In fact, just a couple weeks ago a friend from those days brought up the topic of the infamous Smellygut, so I guess real legends never die.

I also have a few of the f-series strung with some classic gut.
What a wonderful combination for feel and control !
