As Safin connected on a serve in the first set, his racket broke and he was left holding only the grip, prompting him to entertain the crowd by pointing to his right biceps.

"I broke my racket once on a smash, this time it was a serve," the 6-foot-4 Safin said.

I have never seen of something like that happened before.

I, alas, have. It happened to me. Since I bang it in at all of about 110, though, I imagine it was due to a sneaky unseen crack in my bat, rather than my mega-macho servage.

Didn't shear it off at the handle, but did collapse the head of the stick. Freaked my opponent out, and probably would have won the point on intimidation alone had the serve not wound up dribbling sideways onto the neighbor's court. That was my old Le Coq Sportif graphite mid. It sucked anyway, so no big loss.

I've seen the head of Sampras' racquet collapse on a return at Wimbledon one year. I think he was playing Henman.
