Could someone list the common tennis slangs used in the United States?
I recently started playing tennis here (am originally from India) and couldnt catch quite a few phrases (like poaching, sand bagging etc).

Sand-bagging is pretending to be a lower level player than you really are.
Poaching is when the player at net moves to volley a shot intended for his/her partner, to either win the point or put the opposing team on the defensive.
Hope this helps.

Could you come up with more such "phrases"?

When one deliberately calls a ball of yours out when it was in, you've been hooked. A hooker is a cheater.
A greaser is a pro who did something that would be cheating under amateur rules. Such as what Henin did at Roland Garros. So, she is not a hooker, but a greaser.
Being double bageled is losing a match 6-0, 6-0.

you've been taped is when you hit a good, hard shot but it hits the white net tape. of course, there is a meat ball, i dont think that one needs explaining. grab 'em is a term used to indicate that you've just been screwed over by your opponent.

hottie=think Anna K., Maria Sharapova...
moonball=high looping topspin shot
Jackass=think Conners, McEnroe, Mattress Mac...
schooled/smoked/toyed with=beat other guy badly

Anyone use "shank" for mis-hits or framed balls?
04-17-2004, 03:00 PM
Yeah, that's a "shank."
Also - sometimes people abbreviate "fifteen" to "five" when calling the score.

A 6-0, 6-1 score is "A bagel and a breadstick"
04-18-2004, 04:41 AM
This one's my own...
When you "shank" it, and it goes over the net with really weird spin, I call that a "slopspin" shot. See, it's not SLice, not tOP, it's SLOP...

Here's some from the UK, well ones are club has used in the past...
A bandit is the same as a previously explained sand-bagger.
Tubing is to nail the guy at the net in his stomache
Smoked is when you burned someone with a passing shot
saying '5' instead of '15' when you call score.
Dropping the winning set score etc saying you won 5 and 4 means you won 7-5, 6-4.
04-18-2004, 03:51 PM
What's a "tool"?
04-19-2004, 03:44 PM
Another one which I learnt recently...
Jamming - To serve or return straight to the opponent's body
04-19-2004, 04:34 PM
tool is slang for penis
04-19-2004, 05:06 PM
Well, then I guess if you are going to be one, you might as well be a big one.
(And Jimbo was both an *** and a TOOl simultaneously?)
04-20-2004, 04:29 AM
I guess Jimbo could take care of himself!
DNR: (Did not return)....Not quite an Ace, but just as good.
"I served up a bunch of DNR's that game"
