Who were Fed's toughest opponents in a grand slam or finals of a Grand Slam?

I should be studying for my midterm exam but I'm too nervous to study so I'll just post here instead.

Nadal, Sampras and Del Potro come to mind... but I didn't follow him in his earlier years.

So the opponents he beat were not too tough?

Jiri Novak. Federer really blew that 5 setter at Wimbledon when he was 17.

Not too tough if he beat them :p Nadal has been the only guy he hasn't been able to dominate when it has really counted (I'm still waiting for more proof to be shown by Del Potro)

I don't know if you're a native English speaker but applying the word "too" completely changes the outlook on this. So far you've asked who the toughest were and now you're asking who was too tough. Same answers though really. The players he didn't beat were too tough and the players who he lost to were the toughest...because he lost to them?

You could ask who his 10 toughest opponents were and this question would be much better, because then people with any logic would only then start adding people who he managed to beat.

I am a native English speaker and in this sentence, I mean "too" as "very". So I am asking "So the opponents he beat were not very tough"?

It was pretty tough for Fed to win Mirka off Stefanek.

Nadal on Clay

Currently Djoko if he can pull himself together....i really dont know what his prob is

Nadal 08 for sure, but Fed actually had a 3-2 winning record over Nadal in 2007.

A fit Nadal is the toughest opponent, not only on clay but on every court, the very high topspin to Rogers backhand is such a difficult shot, even for the master himself.
hope we see the rivalry back soon...

Nadal, though Fed managed to sneak a few big wins v Nadal when he was injured.

...and I thought it was a coincidence that the amount of Nadal's career-losses and the amount of injuries of his are exactly the same :D.

Here we go again. 2004-2007 (H2H 8-6 Nadal) they were BOTH in their primes. 2008 Fed began the backside of his career. Nadal was raging prime. Still Nadal had to kill himself to dethrone Fed. So if you want to play the game they both are not prime anymore so any win on either part is legit.
This injury and sneaking wins thing is totally WEIRD.

I always find your nick amusing, given your perspective on Federer. You do know that his one of Fed's nicknames in his teen years was "The Natural", don't you?

I could not agree more. The only reason Nadal lost 2 sets against Federer at Wimbledon 2008 was because he quickly got injured. However he recovered in the final set.

Yes and want to bet the couple wins are conveniently the 2 Wimbledon wins? Not the smaller tourney wins. Has to be the two Wimby wins.....

Wouldn't it be interesting if we saw another Nadal vs Federer match soon? We've waited for far too long.

When were these wins? How do you keep your green skin from burning?

He only won a single match since 2007. Nadal wasn't injured at Wimbledon in 2007. We know if he is truly injured he retires(AO 10). He was just plain spanked on his weakest surface at The Masters Cup. No injuries there. Wasn't injured at Madrid in 09.

Nadal and Nalbandian. Hewitt and Murray and Djokovic too. Might throw Agassi in there too. But Nadal at the top of the list. Fed still has a long way to go to level that head to head record.

I wouldnt say Murray, Djokovic, and Nalbandian Hewitt tough opponents for Roger. Nalbandian never showed up for slams so him and Roger barely ever met. Fed has had the decisive advantage more times than not over Murray and Djoker when its mattered most. Hewitt couldnt do anything to Roger once he hit his prime and Hewitt's top level ended around 2006 or so. Roddick is 2-19 vs. Roger. Pretty much a decisive walk in the park for Roger.

Outside of Nadal.. I dunno how anyone can say there really was a tough opponent for Roger

Nadal, Nalbandian, Agassi and Del Potro. Safin defeated him once at the Australian Open but this was the only time when he was focused and in form in a Slam match against Federer. Hewitt and Roddick also challenged him a few times.
