Different Guages in Hybrids?

If I use an 18 guage poly for my mains, does the synthetic cross need to be 18 or 17, or can I use a 16 guage for the cross? Is there a rule of thumb on this?

I use a 16L for the mains and a 17 for the crosses. It doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter. The synthetic crosses usually break first, so might want to consider a thicker gauge. otherwise yo might end up restringing your racket quite a bit.
