Wimbledon
US Open
Roland Garros
Australian Open...

What is your most memorable finals/year? My favorites are (well, I've watched only few of them. That said...):

Wimby : 90 Edberg df Becker/Navratilova df Garrison, 80 Borg df McEnroe
US open : 92 Edberg df Sampras
RG : 92 Seles df. Graf (I also like 89 Chang vs Lendl but it's not a final)

83 RG Noah v Wilander, hsd to inspire McEnroe if Noah could win serving and volleying

'01 USOpen Final Sampras d. Agassi (good match for a non-5 setter and no major fireworks, but it was Sampras' swan song)
'99 Roland Garros Final Graf d. Hingis (Hingis cruising until she crossed the net in between points to dispute a line call; a good example of the French fans dictating play)

That was the '02 US Open final.

'04 Wimbledon - Federer d. Roddick
'99 French Open - Agassi d. Medvedev
'89 French Open - Chang d. Edberg
'80 US Open - McEnroe d. Borg
'82 Wimbledon - Connors d. McEnroe

01 Wimbledon Final - Ivanisevic / Rafter
04 RG Final - Gaudio / Coria
99 Wimbledon Final - Sampras / Agassi (Watching Sampras that day I just thought Sampras had mastered this beautiful game)

I was a Wilander fan, so I have to add these:

'88 Australian Open final: Wilander d. Cash (8-6 in the fifth set!!)
'88 US Open final: Wilander d. Lendl (6-4 in the fifth set to clinch the #1 ranking!!)

Also, this wasn't a Grand Slam final and Wilander didn't even win, but one of the epic matches that helped me fall in love with tennis was in the '82 Davis Cup quarterfinals where Wilander and McEnroe battled for nearly 7 hours in an epic 5 setter! Great drama...

'88 US Open final: Wilander d. Lendl (6-4 in the fifth set to clinch the #1 ranking!!)
...

I thought of that match as well Jack. I found Wilander slightly less entertaining than paint drying and that match was somewhat tedious and long winded to me. However, it was 2 great champions with very much on the line. From a strategic perspective, it was an interesting chess match and test of will, patience and nerves(even if the pace of the match was also on par with chess ;-). Both players masters of consistency but both looking to end a point more quickly if possible without going over the reckless line knowing their opponent would not give them freebies.

Gotta say:

2004 US Open final: Federer vs Hewitt. I've never seen someone get flattened like that on a tennis court, let alone by such truly beautiful play. Federer was really in his own world in that final. You just have to say !

I saw part of Pete's retirement in a resturant--wish I'd seen the final.

1. Ivanisevic-Agassi Wimbledon final - 1992, I believe? One of the best matches ever, poor Ivanisevic had to wait a decade before he could win his only grand slam title.
2. Edberg-Courier at the Australian open - they were the finalists two years in a row, 1992 and 93, i think, both edge of the seat matches
3. Federer-Nadal at Miami this year - Federer is the man!!!
4. Coria-Gaudio French Open final last year - not the highest quality, but what theatrics from Coria in a final of a grand slam! Lost the 4th set deliberately!

Well to limit it to finals:

80 Wimbledon, Borg def. McEnroe. The match that made me fall in love with tennis.
80 US Open, McEnroe defeats Borg. Mac gets some revenge, made more impressive by going to a fifth set tiebreak against Connors the day before.
81 US Open, Austin def. Navratilova. 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. Austin held on. This match marked Martina's ascendence, even in defeat, and I won't forget her tears after losing.
82 Wimbledon, Connors def. McEnroe. A heavy underdog, Jimbo proves he still has it.
83 US Open, Connors def. Lendl. After a close third set, Lendl throws the fourth set, eliciting boos from the Connors leaning crowd.
84 US Open, Navratilova def. Evert. Evert almost pulled it out, and this at the height of Martina's dominence.
84 US Open, McEnroe def. Lendl. Just beautiful tennis from Mac.
93 Wimbledon, Graf def. Novotna. Novotna had Graf on the ropes and fell apart, then cried on the Dutchess of Kent's shoulders.

How was the UPO final 1890-Borg kicking a ball over the net when his racquet shattered?
How was Wimby final between Borg and Tanner? Did Tanner really destroy the net? What exactly happened?
Sampras' serve going through Rafter's racquet, was it one of GS finals? That means multile breakage of string-cannot imagine although Sampras hits +135mph serve.

1999 Roland Garros - Agassi-Medvedev
Agassi (FINALLY!) wins RG on what was thought to be his best surface after being down 2 sets.
1980 Wimby was possibly the greatest of all Open Era.

Heh heh, I meant USopen final 1980. Bud Collins' book says that Borg's best shot was that kick. I wonder if this final and 1981 Wimbledon final between these two men were good too. I agree their 1980 wimby final is one of the best of open era.

I'm going on the whole tourny slant here.

'99 Wimby. Tims run to the semi's, then stopped by Pete, then the final against Aggassi. Brilliant

'04 RG. Tim's bewildering run to the semi's and then the topsy turvy final, which everyone thought would be an anti-climax after the Coria Henman semi

but by far the best i've seen is
'01 Wimby, Ivanisevic's wild card run. Henmans run to the semi's (you catching the pattern yet  ) all but beating Goran, then the rain. Then the unbelievable final, made even more special because it was on a 3rd Monday with all the proper fans.
