Hi folks,

I was looking at Fed's match against Serra, and surprisingly enough, I thought that Fed looked very skinny. I know that he weighted more than 80kg (european) but yet his arms, especially the left one, seems really skinny, how can you explain that ?

He read the thread on here about being fat and immediately went on a diet.

:) Yeah, maybe !

Perhaps I did not say the good thing, my point is that his arms look skinny, compared to what he is supposed to weight ...

Is his arms more skinny than Davydenko's?

Fed's left arm was always skinny.

He has a very tiny left arm. As for being skinny, I would call him slender. A majority of his muscle appears to be in his legs.

He has big legs, a sloppy core, barely any of your body weight comes from arms.

TennisandMusic

Because he is. He really isn't as "imposing" as the other players are in person, but he does have strong legs. Obviously.

Federer's strong built, but his arms are pretty skinny. It's all technique people.

Fed used to be slightly chubby (baby fat?) back in 2002-2003, but that changed in the following years and now he's ultra-fit.

Some people say he's got a gut.

But, obviously, those people are the picture of fitness - otherwise they wouldn't say that.

You're forgetting his height. He's not a basketballer but he's tall.

You don't need to be muscly or chubby to win at tennis. He is super fit.

au countraire.

Like someone above already said, Federer has skinny arms but his torso and back are powerfully built.

That can explain why he weights the same as Rafael Nadal (who has stronger arms but not such a strong back and core as federer's).

True and sometimes what appear to be muscles can be deceiving.

cilic is 1.98 cm and weights only 83 kg. You'd say he's very skinny and he does appear to be so on the tele but I bet he's very strong in spite of that.

I guess if you mean strictly tennis physique you could say he's average, not much more than that.

tennis is cardio intensive and relies on racket head speed - flexibility of joints and arm speed. Excess muscle will only slow you down.

Most players on tour are pretty skinny and toned. But the toned part doesnt actually come from playing tennis - it comes from doing other gym and fitness work.

Nadal is the slight aberration.

How true is this? Just curious.

Well I think his slender arms is of great advantage for him or else he wouldn't win multiple grand slams.

As one of the member stated, "you really don't have to be muscly or chubby to be able to win grand slams. Obviously Fed did it!

While the weight on the ATP site rarely changes (unless the player announces his weight, which happened with Roger like... two years ago), and doesn't reflect the ups and downs in their weight. Roger recently said he had lost weight sometime in 2009 because he said he felt a bit slow. I believe he goes up and down quite a bit. He's naturally slender, and the 'gut' he sometimes seems to have is mostly about his posture than anything else, he tend to stand with his back arched a bit, but if you look at him sitting down shirtless, there's not an ounce of fat there, he just doesn't have the six pack some of the other guys do.

And yeah, he has massive muscles in his legs. You look at him sitting down sometimes next to the other guys, and the muscles in his legs are totally riped and defined.

1 european kilogram= 1.52 asian kilograms

so he's really about 120kgs.

I stumbled upon this the other day, and I was shocked too at first when I saw his arms:

Because you don't generate power from your biceps. How much pace and spin can you put on the ball if you just stood still facing forward, without bending knees and lifting off at contact, or any hip rotation, and just swung your arm at the ball? You need to get your body into the shot. It's all about technique. That being said, Roger has flawless technique.

Was this picture taken in Federer's wild and crazy days when he was wearing jewellery and hanging out with Safin? ( His left arm looks to be the same size as Safin's.)

Few reasons:

1. He's got an ectomorphic body type but with a more mesomorphic chest. Overall his build is very slender, birdlike, but his chest and shoulders are actually quite broad. Slender arms hanging from broad shoulders look even more slender.

2. He's not on HGH

3. He plays so much tennis his metabolism is geared for long distance, like a 1500 meter runner. This prevents his carrying too much muscle.

4. I suspect his workout regimen is geared to promote fast-twitch explosion and relaxation rather than bulk, with emphasis on legs, hips, back and shoulder girdle. Doesn't look like he wants to build muscles on his arms at all.

According to his coach, he doesnt do weight training anymore. Takes no risks to avoid injuries.

he has to be skinny in order to maintain his excellent footwork - the milestone of his play. No footwork - no GS.

first point, not possible
fourth point, if you are developing your fast-twitch muscle fibres they become bigger

my guess is that mirka just raided the fridge again....
