Things like stamina, control and power are common for all surfaces but what makes a clay court expert a clay court expert?
Is it the 1. sliding on clay like your on rollerskate 2. drop shot and 3. Extreme topspin with Western grip?

It is the footwork

A clay court champ must be a fighter like Nadal or Hewitt.

You don't have to be an expert to know that you need to footwork(slide) on clay, which separates it from other surfaces. I agree dropshots are more effective on clay then other surfaces.

As others have mentioned... footwork, patience, consistancy with strokes, and endurance are all key.
Almost all of the great clay court geniuses were mentally tough as well, which the patience, endurance, and consistancy are a part of.

Rodzilla, like you said, it is true that you don't have to be an expert to know that you need to footwork(slide) on clay, but ONLY THE EXPERTS MASTER THAT PARTICULAR FOOTWORK, and it is not only sliding, it is also the ability to find some grip on the court when you start to run to reach the balls, it usually needs for the player to lower his center of gravity between during a rally, so more knee bending, it also needs for the player to use shorter steps than on hardcourts, and many other footwork subilites. So for the players the problem is not to know tha clay needs a particular footwork, their problem is to actually mastering it...

Okay, I see what you are saying spinbalz. Well, one has to have all that is in the posts in this thread to be an expert.
Yeah, all those things stated and also the ability to use the geometry of the court to its fullest. On clay it is all about right positioning in which your opponents won't hurt you no matter how hard they would hit. Things like using angles with extreme topspin to open up a court.. ability to FEEL when to hit the right drop shot.
