Coria up 4-3 in the 1st set, up a break.

As I predicted in another thread, Coria knows how to play Nadal now, and will win.

YEMntFtb

4-5 now on serve

Marius_Hancu
05-08-2005, 06:44 AM
I doubt Coria will be able to do much better than in Monte Carlo. He started then to attack, didn't have physical resources to sustain for a longer period.

YEMntFtb

nadal takes the first set 6-4

MAN!!!!!!!!! Coria can't keep his break for nothing!!! Thats twice a break has been gained back by Nadal.

Same as in Monte Carlo.

Not enough power and intensity in critical moments, to use as a reserve. Can't play Nadal just with placement.

Coria is such an amazing player on clay, he always finds a way to frustrate hes opponents. Its 1 set all, and I think Coria has a point to prove as many thought he was having a bad year after such a long title drought. I admire the guy for playing an intensive hard court schedule this year.

Marius_Hancu

OK, great to see Coria was able to take the 2nd.
Now he needs another. Don't relent, man, or ...

$3 a month for tennis channel, get it!

Oh man, what a close match. I wish Coria would put it together.

federerhoogenbandfan

As outstanding a clay courter as Coria is, he is far too defensive in his style of his play. This puts him at the mercy of what a quality opponent is doing, even on his favored clay. When he plays Nadal or Ferrero, or even players like Federer or Agassi who may not be as great on clay technically speaking; they are still in almost complete control of the outcome of the match, if they play patient enough with the right amount of agression at key periods, they will beat him every time.

Docalex007

Nadal gets the break back from Coria in the 4th.....I wish I could watch this match.....i'm sure its being broadcasted everywhere in Europe. Good for you guys with the Tennis Channel. Screw ESPN and their Uno coverage.

I don't agree with your last part of your statement. With Federer, maybe yes simply because when Fed is really on, there is not much Coria can do. As against Agassi, I watched they played the last two times on clay. Coria at this point is just better than Agassi on clay, end of story.

federerhoogenbandfan
05-08-2005, 09:07 AM
Well the phases of their matches Agassi was able to strike the right balance between patient, agression, and correct decisions on when to pull the trigger, he held the slight edge I thought. Just my opinion.

Docalex007
05-08-2005, 09:11 AM
doesn't seem like anyone can easily hold serve in this match. Well, Coria got the break back AND held his serve....way to go Coria.

YEMntFtb
05-08-2005, 09:15 AM
Coria up a break in the 4th 4-3

YEMntFtb
05-08-2005, 09:21 AM
looks like he's about to hold serve - yes he does it 5-3 after double faulting up 40-30 he wins it in a douce game.

YEMntFtb
05-08-2005, 09:31 AM
Coria takes the fourth set holding serve in another douce game. 2-2 into a fifth

Brian Purdie
05-08-2005, 09:31 AM
anyone's game now, but seeing Nadal fold against FedEx in Miami makes me favor Coria

Brian Purdie
05-08-2005, 09:37 AM
coria breaks to open the 5th

Docalex007
05-08-2005, 09:39 AM
I agree Brian

YEMntFtb
05-08-2005, 09:40 AM
I think Coria may take this, it would be spectacular however if Nadal won another masteries series....

Just held serve in another douce game to go up 2-0

Brian Purdie
05-08-2005, 09:47 AM
nadal needs to spend his afternoon testing coria, win or lose, to plan his strategy for paris. no need in showing your entire hand in Rome

Nadal has had an amazing couple of weeks irrespective of this result. Infact he may tank this fifth set, to ensure he is fresh and fully fit for RG. Nadal is clearly fatigued and needs rest prior to the FO.

YEMntFtb
05-08-2005, 09:55 AM

Jack the Hack

Infact he may tank this fifth set, to ensure he is fresh and fully fit for RG.

Ummm... so Nadal would "tank" a 5th set in a Masters Series tournament final so he could be rested for a tournament that starts in two weeks? That's crazy talk!

If Nadal is the fighter we think he is, he'll keep firing away. However, Coria is a very good clay court player and deserves to win this match if he can keep his foot down on Nadal...

I see that the "live" scoreboard now says it's 3-2, with Coria up one less break...

gustavo33
05-08-2005, 10:05 AM

gugafan,

You just wrote:

but a few minutes earlier, you wrote this:

Grinder
05-08-2005, 10:18 AM
Gugafanatic, honestly...why would he tank the final set? That's like saying if he tries hard this set, his chances for Roland Garros will be ruined...

Fedubai
05-08-2005, 10:18 AM
4-3 Nadal! I only caught the tail end, when he was down 1-3. Must be a great match.

I think we can safely say neither of these guys has "figured the other out." Both young enough that we could be looking at a really excellent claycourt rivalry for quite a while. (Hoping, anyway.) Great tennis, if gorgeous groundstroking and building points is the way you like your tennis. Not exactly Federer-esque artistry, but beautiful in a completely different way.

God help me, I love clay season.

yeah, from what I'm hearing today, this is a budding claycourt rivalry. I guess neither has the other figured out. One should expect this kind of tennis from two of the best claycourters in the world.

Rafa Nadal

He makes enough money to cover the fine. From now on, the more he plays the less chance he has at RG. He has played too much before RG. He wears himself out. RG is best of 5 every match, not just the final.

If he plays in Hamburg, and does not rest, then I don't think he will win the French Open either. However, if he rests now and comes back fresh for the French he is the clear favorite. He only goes the distance against the best clay courters like Coria. He will destroy early round opponents in 3 straight sets. Bank on it baby!

this is problem for everyone. look at last year's final.

even if we assume Coria played theater at a given moment, it's still very difficult.

easy solution: Federer serves and volleys, wins like Nastase in 1973, with no sets lost. he knows how to do it (Hamburg, 2003, I guess, against Safin).

Congradulations to all you fools. Now Nadal has hardly any energy left for the French...and he has another touney comiing up. Overextended himself...blah hes not the king of clay coria proves it. Big deal the match could have gone either way both players had the same exact shot as proved in the 5th set tiebreak. Coria and Nadal and maybe ferrero in the future are the best on clay.

26 games to 25....whatever the difference was, it was small, and considering all the physical problems Coria has had and the effect that has to have on his training and conditionning, one has to give him a lot of credit. That was too bad, pound cat. Because before then, the match had been very sportsmanlike on both sides. As Coria said after the match, it's hard to run for 5 hours and then lose because of two points. He was understandably very disappointed, as Nadal would have been if he had lost. But it was a great final.

I chose not to post this info on the vamosrafael.com site. TTC has done an amazing job in Rome, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Acapulco, Costa do Suipe and Buenos Aires. But for them, I would have seen about 3 Nadal matches this year on TV. Instead, I've seen about 20. As my husband says, it beats the price of plane tickets.

If Rafa plays RG, I hope ESPN gives his matches the coverage they deserve. But I'm not too optimistic.

Yes, it would be so much better if he was a back-stabber like Roddick or a full-of-himself pr*** like Nadal who also covers it up with a false flag of humility. Coria is like Connors or Gonzalez, an in-your-face SOB. Nadal and Roddick appeal to the sorority sl**s and blue hairs who can't/don't want to see through their transparent hypocrisy.
I like Nadal's high-percentage tennis, but the attitude? And Tennis calls Hewitt grating, and not him???

I didn't see the match. Was there a specific reason that Coria didn't go to the net to shake hands, other than losing the match or him being, in general, a little punk? Was there any trash talk during the match? It's a pretty rare thing on the ATP-I remember Muster did that, after a match against Jeff Tarango, but, punk that Muster was, his opponent was an even bigger one and didn't deserve a handshake, as I recall.

I just watched the replay of the last set, with my husband, and after Rafa won, he fell to ground, and then when he got up, Coria had already shaken hands with the umpire, so Rafa went over and shook hands with the umpire and Coria. It wasn't at the net, though.

But I asked my husband about it, and he doesn't normally take note of these things, but his comment was "Perhaps Coria didn't want to wait until Rafa got up off the ground to shake his hand." So there you have it, the views from our household. *lol*

Well, that MIGHT explain it. Who knows what Coria was thinking, but after you've lost a VERY tough and close match, the last thing you want to do is be made to wait while the hot dog on the other side of the net completes his victory dance. I'm sure Nadal was ecstatic and beside himself with joy and did not intend to humiliate Coria, but if I were Coria, I wouldn't have waited around either. That stuff will start to get old with the other players...fast.

Nadal didn't do a victory dance by any means. He fell to the ground, and immediately got up, but by the time he went over to the net, Coria had been there, done that. Pound cat is right on with that.

I know Coria was disappointed, as he should be.

But what's with

That stuff will start to get old with the other players...fast

These guys were out there for over five hours playing their hearts out. One came out on top, but I have a feeling whoever had won would have fell to the ground.

But I have the feeling that if Rafa had lost, he would have hung around at the net to shake hands, if not more.

Phil

Well, like I said, Coria is a punk ANYWAY. So even if the "victory dance" was very short, as you say it was, I'm not surprised. Though I've SEEN "Rafa's" theatrics on other occasions-gets annoying, as a viewer.

Serena Williams, when she was a few years younger (and actually winning matches consistently) used to do a slow, awkward type of rain dance, and the losing player inevitably had to stand at the net and wait though all that for a cold fish of a handshake. That kind of thing wouldn't be for me.
