I was curious to see just how many more matches Nadal played in the best of three set tournaments. In many ways, they are more grueling and tougher on the body than Slams since matches are often played 4-5 days in a row. Maybe that's why Nadal's been so beat up in recent years: so many times he's played 4-5 matches in a span of 4-6 days.

Total matches played in best of 3 set tournaments: January 2007-present:
Nadal: 200
Federer: 153
(47 more for Nadal)

total finals made, best of 3 set tournaments
Nadal: 23
Federer: 16
(7 more for Nadal)

total semis made, best of 3 set tournaments:
Nadal: 34
Federer: 24
(10 more for Nadal)

yeah.. it is well known that fed doesn't play 90+ matches a year (and win 85+ of them) after he turned 26 years old. Not news.

Maybe that is why Fed has been relatively healthy and Nadal has been injury prone,

Yes, but Nadal is 23 and should be in his prime and should be able to play 90+ matches a year.

And since then Roger has been slowing down, winning 7 more majors in the last 13. While Rafa has been peaking since, getting injured all the time. It's obvious what Fed's agenda is.

When Nadal gets to 26 years old, if he is still playing the tour, he probably will do the same as Federer did. You can not compare the 2 when they are 5 years apart.

Good job Jenny.:)
The difference is Roger had better results at the GS. And since GS rewards much more points than 3 set matches, Rafa has to work hard to catch up with Roger. In order for Rafa to overtake Rogerís ranked #1 in 2008, he had to played well at the GS, not just the 3 set tourney alone. For Rafa to get 46 weeks at #1, thatís include a MUST winning atleast 2 GS in a span of 12 months. A testament of how difficult it is to be #1 in this era, unlike previous generations where slamless players have a shot at #1. Roger doesnít give #1 away that easy(despite mono in early 2008 that slowed him down), players has to earn it!

If Nadal ever thought this was possible while playing his style of game, then he is deluding himself.

IF Nadal has his way he would play all year. The kid loved to play you know.
