View Full Version : Why is FEDERER still wearing Vapor VI's?

It seems with all the lunarlite colorways out now, he would have finally made the switch, but for the Aussie open up all the way to Miami, so far we have seen him play in Vapor VI's with custom colors to look like the new lunarlites. Is this just telling us the VI's are too good to be replaced, and Nike is doing what they can to sell the new LL's ?? and When, if ever, will we see Fed make the switch?

I know a lot of people prefer the LL's to the vi because they're softer but the vi's have more support, and the ones Fed gets custom made for him are probably exceptionally soft as well, not like the extremely stiff stock vi's.

If he hasn't made the switch yet I'm not sure when, or even if, he will switch

He's going to stick with the vapor speed soles. Most likely there's zoom air as well. I've practically worn every single shoe fed as wore, he only changes the uppers, so it's unlikely there will ever be complete switch. It's always interesting to see what Nike does though.

When Fed was using the Lunarlite upper, did it have the modified vapor speed outsole? From what I remember people were saying that it seemed like Fed was slidding and slipping a lot more with the LL.

Eh I think he'll switch eventually. Nike wouldn't invest all that money into having him endorse the Vapor line and then change the technology without Fed's consent or approval. If I'm wrong correct me, but hasn't he been apart of the design team of the Vapors ever since the IV's were released???

In my humble opinion, the Vapors started going downhill after the IV's:

- The V's (still a comfortable shoe) seemed a tad stiffer and less stable.

- The VI's (I went for a pair of the 'Oreos' on their old-school-Borg-Diadora looks alone) are PLASTIC--horrible, stiff feel. Never even opened the 2nd pair.

- The Lunerlight's have dropped 2 ounces? How does a shoe that wasn't that heavy to begin with, drop that much weight--in just one model change--and not compromise stability?

Maybe I should look at the Barricades...too bad, I always liked the plush yet low-to-to-ground feel of Nike...

yea, fed did indeed use the retail LL for Doha I believe. When it comes to the Masters and GS, it's all about the PJ'ed shoes.

You should try the propulse 2. It plays much lighter than its advertised weight which isn't really a slouch (16.7oz), which TW commented on in their review as well. Sole is practically right on the ground its so thin in the forefoot. Heal has a bit off shock padding but nothing 'barricade' like, plus a 6-month warranty, whats not to like?

I wish they made the retail ones abit wider. In fact, I wish they made all their shoes a bit wider, mostly in the toe-box area. I've always had abit of discomfort with the toe-box being abit tight

The LL have a wider toe box. It sounds like that's what you're looking for. I have a pair, too wide for my liking

I'm now curious to see if we will finally see him wearing the lunarlites with the vapor speed soles (and not just retail LL's which he did use in Doha, and practice sessions in IW) ...

Nextman, thanks for the suggestion--interesting shoe. I play almost exclusively on clay, so a bottom with a herringbone pattern would be the preferred type of tread on the bottom (e.g. Barricade). Now if only TW could push the release of the VI version and match companies that are already offering it for sale ...

(like a company whose name refers to the largest constrictor snake in South America, i.e.,

www. a n a c o n d a s p o r t s.com or, just Google "Addidas Barricade VI" and it'll pop up).

I will add this much. I have tried the LL and as stiff as the VI are they are much more solid and after break in I prefer them.

I got the new orange LL but after a day or 2 my foot hurts because there is not enough padding on the side.
I am trying to track down VI's and stock up.

Obviously from the looks of things Fed custom shoes are based on the vapor vi, are much lighter (similar weight to a size 9, fed size is closer to 12), and probably much less durable than retails too.

I've seen him wear both lunarlite vapors and custom vapor vi's this year. I really don't think he cares about his shoes that much, probably just grabs whatever is given to him or has lying around...i believe he wore vapor V's (custom) last year during FO practice a couple times.

He didn't want to put it on an RDC machine because it runs a risk of damage and rightly so, then some trollers got on his back and well....the rest is history :(

Preference generally, but they were generally seen as awesome shoes. I had a pair and loved them- was a while ago though and i wonder if they'd still be as good if i had them now, but still, great shoe

Nike would have decided what colors he will wear months ago. Federer would have had a big imput but in the end he wares what colors nike want him to. He also wears a lot of red and white as its his national colors

It might be he's alternating between the two was looking at the Estoril Open pictures section on the ATP site, there's two pics of him training one he's wearing the LL the other the Vapor VI.

Chezbeeno

Maybe he thinks that wearing the LL's had something to do with his loss in Rome so now he's back to vi's, there's also a chance he's kind of superstitious and since he had such a good year last year with the vi's that he should stick with them this year.
