It would be tough for Federer to defend Hamburg this year. All the big guns are in his draw: Guga, Safin, Agassi, Coria, Moya, Ferrero..etc. If Nadal withdrew, those in the other half of the draw (Roddick and Gudio) should have an easy path to final.

Add to that perhaps Berdych, who beat him in Athens (but hasn't performed well since).

However, Fed needs tough matches to steel himself again.

BTW, I think Nadal had a pretty easy draw in Rome, until the final that is ... but that's not his fault.

Not sure I agree. He made things look easy against Canas, but he's a very dangerous player. And both Stepanek and Ferrer have had very good clay results lately. In fact, if you look at this pre-Roma "King of Clay" listing, you'll see that Ferrer is the closest to Nadal in terms of claycourt points:
