What is the advantage of putting gut in the mains and poly in the crosses?

I just thought that the gut would help keep the poly "young" and easier on the arm, but that's with gut in the crosses.

Gut mains help keep the poly feel fresh for longer because the gut holds its tension longer and pulls on the poly. I personally love the feel of a gut main poly cross hybrid after the poly has died after a while.

Thats the setup fed uses.

I haven't used gut but I have used multi in mains and poly in crosses. The way I see it mains are about 80% and crosses 20% of "influence."

Having gut in the mains will give you more of the benefits of gut. Like feel, power, softness, etc. On the crosses the poly won't have as much influence.

yep agreed. Mains contribute to the majority of the string. You pay for gut so use it :P

In addition to the awesome feel, comfort, and power, gut also provides a pretty good amount of spin. I personally feel that gut has as much spin as most polys

I really like the gut main and poly cross. Two of my Volkls were strung in November 2009 with that string and I am still playing with them. I know for sure that the poly is dead, but the gut mains are keeping the string bed alive.

I use gut in the mains and poly in the crosses. IMO the major reason to use nat gut is for the feel. Presuming that the mains give you most of your feel, then the conclusion follows to put the gut there.

I use poly in the crosses to minimize string movement and wear, and thus increase durability.
