Rafael Nadal (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/599/;_ylt=AsGhegsghWwJtYAyD.v9ZQIgv7YF) will have no excuse now if opponents give him a hard time about taking too long between points. The four-time French Open champion will play matches wearing a Richard Mille watch designed specifically for Nadal, with materials used in space exploration. Mille says Thursday there are 50 for sale—at a price of about $425,000.

Nadal never before has worn a watch while competing.
He flew from Spain to France on Thursday, and was planning to practice at Roland Garros. The tournament begins Sunday.
His uncle and coach, Toni, says Nadal couldn’t flex his knees last year, when his 31-match winning streak at the French Open ended. This year, Toni says, his nephew’s knees are “perfect.”

I'm sure it's just a tennis bracelet to Mr. Nadal. Time is irrelevant to him when competing on the court.

The purpose of this thread was to point out to Federer fans that Federer is not the only classy person on the tour. Now there's not much that separates the 2.

Mother Marjorie,

There is an amazing amount of double standards on this forum. If Roger does something, he is flayed for it and called arrogant, a jerk, etc. If Saint Rafael does it, it is ignored or he has a right to or it shows how humble he is.

You know how if Saint Rafa ever loses, he was tired, fatigued, or injured. And Roger *never* had mono -- that was a dastardly lie. Only Roger makes excuses, Saint Rafa never does. Etcetera etcetera.

So you will learn to ignore all this after a while, and just have a chuckle. Basically a lot of folks here have not been hugged in a long time.

1. Excuses: everyone has a right to speak of an injury or illness, if asked. The same standard holds for Rafa and Roger. Rafa is not the king of excuses -- his fans here accept only his reasons, that's the double standard.

2. Doper - no proof.

3. No talent - no athlete at that level can have no talent

4. ugly strokes - subjective opinion

5. cakewalk draws - not his fault, he doesn't do them

6. lapdogs - not his fault, Federer has a huge fan club too

7. humility fake -- we don't know what's inside people's minds -- anyone who thinks they do is delusional.

Since I don't want to turn this into Rants and Raves, let me simply say the drawing concrete equivilencies between so-called bailouts (which I did not generally support and in many cases are less than bailouts since the government (with the exception of GM and AIG) has so far made a profit on the monies it loaned to financial institutions) and socialism is intellectually unsound. This is not the forum to debate that so this will be my last word on this subject.

In any event, that particular criticism of Nadal for wearing the watch seems to be a rather unfair criticism--he should be free to make whatever he can and sign whatever deals he can while his value is high--he worked very hard to be where he is today.

Very interesting, and a debate that has raged forever and will continue.

Why I find this interesting is because of the watch. A couple of months ago, I read in the NYT (or may have been the WSJ) that Swiss watchmakers (the guys who meticulously craft the mechanical movements by hand and who have been steadily losing their jobs due to digital technology) were closely monitoring the good times returning to Wall Street. Seems their main customers are the financial types who make a killing. They earn a big chunk of money, and splurge on a $500,000 watch. So, they are keeping the guys employed and an old tradition survives.

Example of trickle-down economics. But when it degenerates to ****-down economics, it is time to oppose it.

Why do we always have to have a childish Rafa vs Roger fight?

You know the routine: certain TT Federer fans lose their minds over the fact that Federer is not dominant at every slam (i.e. winning multiple FO titles), and Nadal has carved a significant piece of tennis history for himself that cannot be ignored in the same era generally celebrating Federer.

While Federer has been --far and above--my favorite player of this era, he's not the God of certain fans' fantasies. It is that type of fan who has to attack all things Nadal (including Nadal fans), as if Federer's legacy is threatened by mere internet chatter. Judging from the flame-ridden threads and anti-Nadal trolling seen at TT, anyone can conclude that chatter is most effective.

Yes, you would never expect a sensitive person like Roger to have a $900 haircut, carry a white purse, or wear a custom-made jacket emblazoned with his initials.

Or stay in a suite in New York named after himself.

Or have an arrangement to fly in Netjet whenever he travels in the US.

Or travel with two nannies, one for each baby.

^ ...pattern reads exactly like another member.....

In any case, Federer's not living in a mud hut, shopping at Wal-Mart, driving a 1995 Toyota enonomy car, or riding mass transit (i.e. the bus), so he's spending his wealth not living like the very same suffering people you only recognize for the purposes of a cheap, inapplicable shot at Nadal.

That is not 425k watch, is just normal Rolex.

While he was there, he build 3 schools for children and children sing him song "Roger our Father"

Only a $6 k watch? I guess nadal got a better offer (just kidding) but I don't think he will ever get to keep the half million dollar watch. He is being paid endorsement fees for wearing it. The watch does, more than anything re-enforce the fact that tennis, and those who are encouraged to watch tennnis, are rich people.. Those are the ones that tennis sponsors care about..and thus TV networks. Makes complaining on message boards and sending e-mails to ESPN rather fruitless, doesn't it.

What a pity.

Nadal will keep watch, I saw in another picture the watch has his name on it.

I see nothing wrong with rich man having nice things, but to me this watch is too much for anyone to show off, especially right now in the world. If Roger wear this watch I would not like it either.

So Roger went to Ethiopia to see how other people lived? Did he just stop his Rolls Royce every once in a while, point at them and laugh? LOL

In case you don't know, both Rafa and uncle Toni are involved with Iberostar (which is a nonprofit organization to help disadvantaged children in the Balearic Islands.)

I am not saying Nadal doesn't deserve nice things he does, he just doesn't need to show off 425k watch while playing tennis, it is an embarrassment to himself and the sport, his uncle should take watch away from him or tell him it is not the right thing to do.

The back bezel and caseband are monobloc to ensure total lightness. Actually one of the reasons why it's so expensive is that it has a tracking system which calculates the trajectory of incoming balls and projects the possibility of a winning shot from the oponent using a very elaborate system involving GPS positioning and good old voodoo. When that happens, a laser beam on an invisible frequency pulverizes the ball and makes everybody (but Nadal) look really stupid. :)

There must be some video of "Roger our Father" out there, right? I hear it should be better than all other videos created in mankind!

Hola Rafa, congratulations on your victory over Gianni Mina. Did it feel a little strange to wear a watch for the first time during a match, or did you not notice any difference than usual? Thanks a million and good luck. Niamh in Ireland

RN: Not really since I had been practicing for a long time now. It has been almost two years since we started working on it and I have been practicing for some months now. It is not that I started on Tuesday with it.

it is very very DUMB working on wearing a stupid watch during matches. I mean, sure he´ll get a lot of money, but it can really affect his double handed backhand. I play tennis and i don´t care what Nadal says,it´s awkward for your strokes and therefore he shouldn´t play with a watch and uncle tony and Nadal´s managers are clowns. I´m a Nadal fan, but this is even more stupid than playing Barcelona

What I'd really pay to see is Andy Murray coming to play in a kilt. I'd like to see him flexing his biceps wearing a kilt with that Scottish face of his.
