I'm just starting 3D studio max, but I am skilled in Autodesk Inventor. 3D studio max (along with maya) are probably the best rendering softwares out right now. Check out what you can do with them.

for those of you with experience, how long or tedious work would it be to create almost a whole world with setting etc. for a short film 5-10 min?

Imagine you live 1/2 mile from the ocean and have an empty, regular sized swimming pool and you were told you had to fill it by walking to the beach with 2 dixie cups then back to the pool, dumping each dixie cup of ocean water into the pool.
This is how long it would take to create a quality, 10 minute animated short film in 3D Studio Max. Hours upon hours.
Its all relative though.
How many characters?
How much movement?
What kind of plugins are you using and how will they affect rendering times?
Will there be sound?
Will there be greenscreening?
Are you an expert?
Are you a student?
How much RAM does your WS have? I hope at least 8gb.
Animation is tedious work. But fun.
I'm not an expert at all but I used to dabble in it a lot back in the old days.

wow.. i see. i am a student filmmaker, and was thinking of doing a short film having to do with fallout. that means creating the wasteland post apocalyptic type of city and then all the creatures etc. i dont think green screen would be needed.. no more than 3 main characters.
med-high movement, with sound.. I do not know what you mean by plug ins and no i am not an expert (that ones easy)

Have you done animation yet? Is this your first project?
Plugins extend the basic functionality of 3D packages.
In 3D Studio Max one of the most popular plugins is Character Studio.
There's a million of them though. Literally.
Creating an apocalyptic wasteland would be marginally difficult compared to say, a futuristic world in space with a lot of custom vehicles or structures.
The best way to learn is with a project.
There's a ton of tutorials online that can build your foundation in the basics of creating objects, atmospheres, lighting etc.
3D Studio Max is one the most powerful software packages on the planet.
Photoshop is NTRP 3.5.

BTW this would be my first animated project. i am actually working to be a director, but havent found anyone to work with so i might have to learn this myself :/
